Well guys, I bought Sample's bug and love it. It is losing a ton of oil through the pushrod tubes so they will need replaced asap, but first, I have to get this starter issue figured out. SO here is whats happening, when I try to start it... nothing. No click, no nothing. BUT, if I bridge the connection from the two posts on the starter itself, I can hear the starter spinning. So, I thought, well, it just isn't shooting out and spinning the flywheel. So I pulled the starter and took it to Checker. They tested it and it passed. First question, why isn't the starter connecting with the flywheel and cranking the engine over? Second question, do you think I need to replace the ignition or what? I don't know why it is that I have to bridge the connection on the starter itself for anything to happen. I did take a test light to it and there is power in all the right places. Right now it doesn't have a keyed ignition though. It only has a battery disconnect do-hicky, a switch to turn on the power and then a button to actually start the vehicle. While I was at checker I did pick up a universal keyed ignition to replace it all with. Now, another set of questions, what is plugged into the switch and what is plugged into the push button? It looks like the switch has two connections. One coming from the battery and one going to the starter maybe? Sorry about the silly questions, I am just semi-new to VWs. I had a VW sandrail, but it seems to be a pretty different beast. Thanks in advance for your help guys. I look forward to actually finding out what is going on with my starter issue here.

I'd start by replacing the starter bushing. If that doesn't fix it I'd put a hard start relay in it.

Cool. Thanks. I read this tech article on Chirco, looks like the best way to do that would be the 3/8 tap right? I don't really want to have to pull the engine unless I have to. Also, whats a hard start relay? I couldn't find any reference to one on Chirco. Thanks Mykul!

Cool. Thanks again man! I will pick up a new starter bushing tomorrow on the way home from work and hope that does it.

No, don't replace the starter bushing. That starter doesn't use it. It is from a '74 Porsche and is considered a self supporting starter. A regular VW starter has a shaft that sticks out and runs in the bushing on the bell housing.

I would disconnect the solenoid wire at the starter, run a new wire directly to the battery and see if it kicks the starter. I really think I just had a bad switch in there.

Ok. Would that do the same thing as if I were to just bridge the two connections on the starter? When I do that, I can hear the starter spinning, but it doesn't seem to be connection with the flywheel. It doesn't crank the motor or anything.

Maybe a bad battery cable too pos or ground. Did you disconnect the original solenoid wire?

You may also find that the ignition switch is bad. That can also cause the thing not to start.

Right. I did think of that, but, if it were the ignition, wouldn't that be eliminated when I bridged the two connections on the starter? I think if I understand correctly, a hard start relay would be the same as what I did by bridging those two connections. That is when I found out I could get the starter to spin, but it spins freely and isn't connecting with the flywheel.

Sounds like the starter is only partially good then. The bendix sounds like it isn't coming out fully.

That was my thought too Sample, but it tested ok at Checker. Think I ought to get it replaced anyhow? And I know you said it has a lifetime warranty at AutoZone. Think if I just give them your phone number they can find it in the system and give me a new one, or will I need the receipt?

By bridging the starter you are giving it full amperage to start it. When the electrical part of an ignition switch goes bad it can cause a severe drop in amperage and not have enough to kick the solenoid in. Another possible culprit is the wiring itself, make sure the main power wire coming to the ignition is in good shape and not corroded anywhere or back connections, same goes with the start wire.
