I’m getting tiered of the wife shuttling me around in her smooth quiet HHR. I ready to bring the Thing back to life. It’s Loud, Hot (or cold depending on the season), stinky and ugly. I sure do love it. I buried it while I was getting my house ready to sale and now that I’m in a new house with a tiny garage and a Sh*##y HOA, I’m ready to crank up the AC/DC and Kid Rock and get back to my trailer/white trash roots and get the hunk of junk back on the road. I’m ready to hurl this machine down the road at 60 mph and hope no one stops in front of me. I’m ready to push in the clutch when passing a cop so that they don’t notice that I don’t have any baffles in my stinger.

With all that being said, I hope to take a lot of pics, maybe help a few folks with my experiences and probably partake in all of your expert advice.

Here are a few pictures of the thing buried in my garage.

On the inside I have 4 engines and all the spare parts I can get in there. Im going to have to find a place for all this junk!

This is the Basket Case engine that I bought from AZHunter here on this site. I got it all put together and it fired right up and ran GREAT, but had a massive oil leak. I striped one of the case bolts next to the cam at the front of the engine (near the fly wheel). After I dig the car out I am going to disassemble the engine, helicoil all case bolts, and reassemble the engine. I expect it to be a good running engine.

Hopefully over the long weekend I can get some work done on it. I ordered an engine stand for the VW engine, but it won’t be here for a week or so.

Gots to finish up a shelf project so have a place to put the junk. I should have pics of it empty, cleared off, and top off by Monday... I am going to start stripping the body monday and get ready for the lift and the body swap.

Got a few things done with the Thing.

Pulled the top, doors, hood, and wind shield. Yanked the seats out.

Garage is still a mess, but looking a little better. Need more space and less junk!!!!

Almost ready to separate the body from the pan.

Looking a lot better with out the rats nest hanging down!

The Cancer that is the demise of this body.

Need to pull all of the stuff out of the engine compartment and remove the rear deck lid and I will be ready to pull the body off and junk it.

i just bought wire and re ran what i have had to so far.... im sure when i get the car functional i will rip her apart and buy a boat fuse panel to re wire the car. i hear their are some decent kits out there but i think its easier to build a loom yourself. that way when you have a problem 5-10 years down the road you still have your schematic that you drew....

i gotta admit im sorry to hear that body is getting junked.... i just dont think their are enough things out there to be junking them... i under stand your reasoning.... just sucks...

I think that is a pretty good idea about the wiring.... I will probably try to do something like that.

I hear you about junking it. I am actually going to give it to a VW guy that helps me out every once and a while, so it may get some life some how if just to supply some parts for another one...

Just a few things tonight on the project. Got the back of the car striped and the pan unbolted. I just have the last 4 bolts to remove and Im ready to tow it over to VWBilly's shop (Now I just need a truck or a car with a hitch to tow it) and bring the pan back to start rebuilding it. I am going to start on lifting the suspension. I have the adjusters, but need to by all the rest of the front end parts. Im also going to hurculine the inside of the pan.

Does anyone hurculine the bottom?

I’m also thinking of putting a Freeway flyer tranny in it... I don’t think it will see much off road around Dallas. My off roader will be a Baja that me and my son will build when he gets a little older.

no pics tonight... it was not that exciting

Later folks!
