I just purchased a 68 Baja last night. Here are some pics, and here's what it has. It needs to be cleaned up a bit and I also picked up a 67 floor pan to replace the rusty one in there. I plan one changing it out with a friend of mine that has worked on these before but I may be needing some additional info from everyone! Anyway on to the Baja.

1835 Motor, Dual Solex Carbs Front Disc Brakes, roll cage and engine cage, Empi Coilovers, Electric fuel pump and electronic ignition.

**Uh-oh, how do I add pics off my computer?

Looks like it worked, although it kept saying there was an error so I reposted a couple of times!

I just bought a complete 67 pan that I rust inhibited and painted today that I plan on changing over to this week. First I need to find someone local that can cut out the new pan's transaxles and weld in the IRS mounts. If anyone knows any good shops in So cal let me know (Anaheim area). I also ordered the carpet kit for this, door panels, a new shifter and some other misc stuff. I'm sure I'll be getting a lot more stuff soon!

That sure looks like a swingaxle from what I can see in that engine pic. Are you WANTING to convert to IRS right now, or are you just trying to get moved over to the new pan?

What do you mean by "cut out the new pan's transaxles?"

I just want to get moved over to the new pan, and by "cut out the new pan's transaxles" I meant just the tube that was there in order to mount IRS brackets, but if I don't have to because the old pan has transaxles, then I won't!

Here's a pic of the new pan painted. I also glued down the old padding for sound deadening purposes (the glue was white)

Ok- don't cut anything out! I think the part you are referring to are where the torsion bars slide in toward the center of the car, right? That's called the torsion housing, and both IRS and swingaxle use that part! It's the same housing on both types of rear suspension. The pivot brackets get welded TO the torsion housing and the frame horns, right where the housing and frame horns meet. I'll try and snap a pic of my IRS pivot brackets tonight when I get home and post it for you, so you can see what I'm referring to.

Bottom line is- if your car IS swingaxle already, you should be able to just move right over to that pan.

Next question- do you have a plan for dealing with the VIN issue? Your new pan ad states that there's no title for the pan, and the VIN stamp on the pan is typically where DMV looks (under back seat, and NOT the VIN tag on the body) to verify the VIN number on a VW. Just so you know- altering a VIN number is highly illegal. If you are going to do something like swap the VINs, do NOT mention it on this, or any website.

Good luck! I'll try and post that pic tonight.

Here's a couple of pics of what the IRS setup and pivot brackets look like. Note the "V" shape of the IRS trailing arm. On a swingaxle setup, the spring plate comes straight back to the wheel, and then the axle tube goes straight in (90* angle) to the trans. The IRS setup has the spring plate coming straight back, then the other portion of the trailing arm going at a 45* angle to the apex of the frame horn/torsion housing, and the axles run from the wheel to the trans. Make sense? Eeek! Hope that's not too much. The pics will help, hopefully. Note, however, that my axles and CV joints are not installed in these pics. Hope this helps you some.

This is a close-up of the pivot bracket.

Here's a good overall pic. You can see the spring plate coming straight back from the torsion bar, and the other part of the trailing arm going back in to the pivot bracket.

One last closeup of the whole setup.

Looks like a good car, but it has the wrong muffler on it. that is a street bug muffler. Water will get in it and rust a hole in the bottom of the tail pipe. You should either cover it when it rains or cut and weld it in a different position so water cant get in.

I was thinking the same thing on the muffler. I want to keep it as a street muffler since I'm in Southern California and cops love to give muffler tickets here. I think I will just chop the muffler a little lower on the end pipe.

I also spent the better part of the day taking off the hood, fenders, doors, all the body bolts, steering column, and other misc parts. Tomorrow I will pull the engine, then the body and finally the pan!
