Hey all,
I am Sol from Phoenix AZ. I don't actually own a Baja yet, but am looking to get one as a daily driver/toy. A little about me, I am 22, have a wife and a 4 month old son. I had a 96 Cherokee and a sandrail with an 1835dp up until a few weeks before my boy was born. Then I sold them both to get a Saturn Vue for the wife to drive. As of right now I am driving a 97 Accord. Its nice and all, but I just want something that is going to be fun to drive that I can take out on the weekends to go camping or to my favorite shooting spot and thought, "Hey, a baja bug would be about the perfect mix of my old XJ and sandrail!" Haha! So thats me in a nutshell. Any questions or thoughts on what I should get or be looking for, feel free to let me know! I have been looking around this site for a bit today and it seems there a lots of nice folks who are more than willing to share their knowledge. Thanks in advance for the answers to all the stupid questions I know I will end up asking! HAHA!

Welcome Sol! Sounds like you're on the right track. Bajas are a KICK, and I can't WAIT to get mine on the road again! Make sure you post some pics of whatever you buy. Any ideas on what you're looking for to purchase? How crazy of a car do you intend to build? The only recommendations I have are avoid 66-68 cars that have the less-desirable front AND rear suspensions on them (ball-joint front and swingaxle rear), and if emissions concerns you then you need a pre-67 car so that you're emissions-exempt in Maricopa county.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Why thank ya sir! I am pretty strapped on cash for right now so I am looking to only spend 2000 to 2500 on the car. I am looking for a smoking deal basically. HAHA! I want something that has a decent interior and exterior and doesn't need any high dollar repairs or fixes right off. Eventually, when I can afford it, I want to get something else as my DD and have the Baja as tricked out as possible and only use it on the weekends for trips to the Cinders and camping and things like that, but that will be WAY down the road I am afraid. Good to know about 66-68s. My rail had a king pin front end and a swing axle rear. Not too worried about emissions. I found a 70 that looks pretty decent and has 31s already with a nice interior and new paint outside for only 2800 that I need to go check out in the next couple days. If somebody can let me know how to post pictures, I can post up a few of my old rail. Thanks for the welcome!

Does the red one have like a white checkered flag on the sides? I have been eyeing that one on craigslist a bit. Just haven't made a call to the guy yet.

I think the decal is silver, but that sounds like the one. He'd be "Bugzyla.com" on this site.

Ok, I just realized that I need to elaborate a little more about the above statement. There are plenty of nice bajas around sporting ball-joint front ends and/or swingaxle rear ends. Basically, it just depends on how aggressive you want to get with the car, and how much modifying you intend to do to the suspension later on. If your aspirations are mainly for a trail/street car, that you won't be pounding too terribly hard, then ball-joint and/or swing axle would be more than adequate for you.

If, someday, you intend to start asking for lots of suspension travel, or lots of lift, the link pin front ends and IRS rear ends afford more opportunity for upgrades, basically.

So, while neither ball-joint or swing-axle are BAD, per se, you just have to decide what you intend to do with the car as far as driving it AND future modifications to help determine what will best suit your needs.

Gotcha. Makes sense to me. I guess I won't worry TOO much about it then, for now at least. For now what I get will need to be a trail/street car. I will want it to have a back seat which I know knocks out the possibility of any fuel cell besides stock. No big deal for now, but later on down the road when I can afford to put some money into something, I will definitely want something that will be for offroad use only and have the IRS and link pin. I did know that IRS was better, but didn't know much about the link pin vs. king pin thing. Already learning! Haha! Thanks for your help so far guys, I know I will have plenty more questions to bug (no pun intended) you with.

Link pin and King pin are one and the same. Link pin (aka king pin) or ball-joint are the two different types.
