I have an 1800cc jetta engine in my baja. But it has never run just quite right. It doesn't help that the way to time these engines is via a hole in the original bell housing; which I don't have.
I am now thinking of going back to air cooled; but it would have to be 1800 and upwards.
Or, what other type of water cooled carb engine would be good; but not too big as ecomomy is a priority to me.
I am thinking of changing my tires to 700's from what I have. All comments welcome.

Most of the US water cooled engines had a TDC mark on the front pulley and cover. It would be easy to do if yours does not. Was it a fuel injected engine or a carburated engine to start with? The FI engines ran a lot better than the carburated ones. The Toyota 22r and Ford 2.0 Were popular conversions. Kennedyeng.com sells an adapter to install many different engines to a bug transaxle. The poplular one these days is the turbo WRX engine.

Hopefully I'm not shunned by all the air-cooled people on here for my comments. And I don't have anything against the air-cooled engines, just not much experience, hopefully I'll come to love them as much as the air-cooled folks.

My background is in Honda and Subaru, and I believe the Subaru EJ series of engines is a great fit for a Baja. Personally I'm not a big fan of switching makes between engine and chasis (i.e. T-bucket with a 350). But the EJ is still a flat four which gives it some credibility. Power wise you can't go wrong, 227 HP from a stock EJ20T (out of WRX) or 300 HP out of a USDM EJ25T (STi). And you have the ability to support 500 HP easily. I don't know what the weight comparison is between say a Type 1 and an EJ20T is, but I'll search and try to find some info. Also, they have been proven to take the beating of off-road driving, with Subarus World Rally Championship experience. And they sound awesome! Just my .02 cents...

By the way, dig your baja!

Thanks to everyone for their help and comments.
There is a TDC mark on the pulley and a mark on the cover, but does anyone know the true timing setting for this engine; ie degrees before TDC. (I have a Hayes manual, but is just says "Check the info under the hood for; and then a list, which also includes spark plug gap)
I don't know if it was FI or not. I live in Mexico and I bought the engine and had it installed by a mechanic here, enough said?
I like the sound of the EJ, but cost and availability are a problem. I work as an English teacher, so the pay is not that good.
Just been looking on Wikipedia and they say the post 1985 22r had problems with the timing chain?
Will any GM engines fit? I like these and I had them in England. Why, because if the timing belt ever snapped, the engine would just shut down, unlike some that end up a right mess.
Thanks again guys

6-8 degress advance should get you in the neighborhood. Move it a couple of degrees at a time until you are happy. You should have a vaccum advance carb for the carburated engine.

It is. It also helps to make sure the distributor shaft bushing is not worn, vaccum and mechanical advances function properly.
