so i need to redo my rear brakes, but i cant get to them because of the axle lug nut being firmly stuck on the axle! it is in gear, and i have tried getting it off while someone held the brakes, but the axle still spins just enough so i can't get it off. what do i do?????? please help its a 1960 baja if that helps

Are you using a HUGE cheater bar? The torque on that thing is supposed to be like 240 lb/ft or some ridiculous thing. You may need to soak it with penetrating oil (I don't know how rusty it is), and then go at it again. Air impact probably won't do it unless you're using one for like farm tractors or Terex trucks!

well its a large cheater bar and i have put penetrating oil on it, but the axle spins when i really push down on it!! even with brakes on and in gear, it slowly moves just enough so i can't break it free.

Are you saying that the splines on the drum are stripped? If so, that's gonna make things a little harder for sure. Does the axle spin inside the drum continually? If it won't bite somewhere, it's gonna be tough to get apart. Also, if that's the case, it won't be long until you're trying to drive and your car won't go anywhere, because those splines make the axle turn the wheel! Shocked

no the splines on the axle are not stripped because it holds on tight, and the ones i can see are in goood shape. when i torque on the wrench, the drum, axle and everything rotates

You need to put a couple lugs in, get a THICK piece of angle iron or box tubing wedge it in there so that it hits the ground while you are using a 36mm socket welded to a 6' piece of box tubing.

Man I hear ya. Shocked
I did mine back a year ago it took me a bit fenagling around with piece of 1" box tubing about 4' long, wedged into the lug bolts, and the longest 1/2 drive breaker bar I could find. I was about to take the approach of drilling out a piece of angle iron to match the lug bolt/nuts and wedge that down but I was fortunate that I didn't need to.
By the way, I bent that piece of box tube almost into a U by the time I finished both sides.

i got it!!! it took three different cheater bars to do it. first was the two foot long typical bent and mangled bar that wasn't long enough, then it was the old playground structure pipe that bent >:(, then it was on to a four foot long, half inch thick steel pipe that finally did the job!! i was on the brakes and my dad was on the bar and it finally came undone. thanks for the tips tho! i didn't realize the torgue needed to undo that dam thing..

Glad you got it. A torquemeister style tool does it in a few seconds with no drama. Also handy for flywheels.

For the future Oman, nuthin' beats heat (on the "outside" part, whether it's a nut or some threaded part that a bolt is frozen into), and an impact driver! BTW, if my memory is working, that axle nut has the highest torque spec on the whole car- at least that I've seen in my Bentley manual.

You put it on the nut and beat it with a sledge hammer. My drum spun while i hit it but it still broke it loose.
