So im new to the forum and pretty new to the baja world as well. I have 1970 baja and while throwin a few back in the woods i thought it would be a good idea to jump a table top at 45...Long story short the pan is bent and will not alow the transmission to shift. So as for the question I have for you all is Do i take the time to replace the pan or just swap the motor into somethin different? What kinda work am I lookin at to replace the pan (now i know this is no small job)? Hopefully you guys can shed some light on the subject..... Very Happy

I have a hard time you'd bend a pan without bending the body, too. Maybe it's just the frame horns?

I'd have to agree- bending the pan without bending the body seems unlikely. If the body is tweaked also, then scrap it or swap the motor into something else. I'd think it'd be hard to straighten a pan- as cheap as they are, IF only the pan was bent, pans aren't that hard to come by. OR, if your car is monetarily worth saving, buying a whole flippin' car (clunker) just for the pan would even be an option.

HAHA alright i deserved that one for sure. Yea it is worth saving for the moment and that was my plan i found one already but now that im getting second opinions that it is unlikely the pan just bent then im not sure what to do...thanks for the help i will get back tomorrow after taking a little closer look at it.

I have bent a frame in the middle. The pans on the side are flexible and the body was fine the doors still work ok not the best. this baja is long gone. I think it was 1991 or 1992.

ok finally got the baja home and pictures off the camera. You guys tell me what you think is bent based on the pics...

as you can see the engine is tweaked way to the left


here are a few pictures under...couldnt tell which one gave the best perspective

Oh gosh. That tranny has seen better days.


It looks to be like the frame horns are twisted. It's hard to tell. The torsion housing looks parallel to the body but your engine hanger looks like it's not parallel to the torsion housing.

A couple of things...

You look like you have a saggy ass end and need to adjust the spring plates to get you more clearance. Either that or your torsion bars are broken or worse... the torsion housing is broken. My guess is that it's just torsion adjustment, though. That's not part of this problem, of course. I thought I'd mention it, though.

If one of the frame horns is bent, which I suspect, I suppose I'd start by pulling the engine and trans. It can be done in less than an hour, but then again, I've done it so many times that it may take you a bit longer. I'd probably take very careful measurements between each of the frame horns to the shock towers. I'd also inspect the welds where the frame horns meet the torsion housing. Then, I'd probably take a floor jack and jack the whole car up my the lower frame horn until it's even with the other one, then just a hair more (maybe 3/16""). I'd weld a 1-1/2" piece of steel tubing from the frame horns (just ahead of where the CV joint is on the transmission) to the shock towers. While the jack is under it it, I'd reinforce the shock towers, since you will be putting a lot of stress on them by doing this. The right way to do it is to put a cage in the whole thing and tie that in to your shock tower, too. If you cant, you might consider running a 1-1/2" tube from tower to tower over the tranny, so at least you'll have some additional support from the other side.

Sounds like you got yourself into a helluva mess. It can be fixed in a day (a long day!) but hopefully you learned something. Don't jump your car without a well built cage and some serious mods.

Change those goofy bumper mounts while you have the welder out.

Definitely need some more tension on your torsions- your clearance is low, but also your travel is limited by the low setting. When you jump the car with little travel, the suspension bottoms out sooner and leaves the rest of the car to absorb the remaining energy. Guess what THAT translates to? Yep, broke/bent stuff! (See pics above) Laughing

Now, I'm not saying that more clearance/travel would have prevented this, BUT it certainly would have helped reduce the stresses on the drivetrain/suspension AFTER the suspension bottomed out.

Hope you've got a money tree in your backyard! Because if you're going to routinely drive that car that hard, you're going to need beaucoup bucks for either 1) massive suspension upgrades or 2) frequent extensive repairs! Shocked

There is no such thing as too high just not enough suspension. I use a anchor mount in concrete to chain a frame to the ground and use a jack to lift raise the up again. a 8x8 steel plate with chain welded to it mounted with wedge anchor bolts will work.

ok so i know it took me a while to get back to this but here i am the engine and tran are out and the frame horn is deff bent. It looks like the right one is like 3/4" higher on the very end of it the left one. I do believe the back end did bottom out and this is what bent the frame horn up. But I can not get the frame horn to bend at all. I tried jacking it up by the lower one but no movement and i actually think that the lower one is the straight one. So i dont know what to do here if you guys have any kind of ideas i will take them. I tried a big azz pipe on the end of it and that didnt really do much and i thought about heat but i dont want to weakin the metal. All help would be appreciated.....thanks. and yes i know im an idiot for getting my self into this mess haha

Working at home with limited tools, chain downs etc....I'd strongly recommend getting a different pan. It's not that big of a deal to swap out, just need about 6 strong buddies or a forklift.....naw really, it ain't that big a deal. Give you a chance to start with a new foundation, rebuild some stuff and paint it all pretty.
You can have everything unbolted in about 2 hours without a impact wrench. Engine and trans already out...piece of cake.
BTW....what part of Denver? Lived there 23 years, haven't been back since 1987 or so.

What if you run a chain up and around one (or both) of your shock towers and fasten it to a floor jack... kind of like you would do while setting your rear spring plates, only put the jack under the frame horn instead.

It's a thought.
