what are the benefits of dual carberators and double barrel carberators?
what are the troubles of them?
which one is better?

do they cause lower mpg or higher? or neither?
do they increase hourse power?

I am an air-cooled novice, but I have heard that it can be a pain to get dual carbs synced right. Also if you look at dual carbs there's more stuff that can break and/or fail.

Running a single two barrel means less things to go wrong, no pain in the rear syncing, and weird linkages. In theory if you get a single two barrel that has the same CFM as a comparable dual carb set up your HP should be the same. But you also have to consider intake manifold differences, they will probably give you a different power band. A single, two barrel will have longer runners which in theory will give you better bottom end and duals will have shorter straighter runners that will theoretically give you higher top end.

As for mileage a single two barrel with the same CFM as duals should get the same mileage, but I have had little experience with this as of yet. I would guess the duals might get a little lower mpg. If you haven't read the Baja Bugs and Buggies book yet, get it. It has a lot of good info. He really never touches on dual carbs, and seems to favor the single two barrels, but I am sure some of the experts here can fill you in better.

but thanks for the advise.

im hopeing to get a carb that doesnt lower the mpg but does perform great.

im rebuilding my 1675 to replace my 1500 which will be for sale soon its a very high performance engine and it was rebuilt this year.
so ill keep you call posted on that if anyone is interested.

im having alote of trouble removing the gland nut on the fly wheel it refuses to come off ill make a seperate posting but if you know any techniques tell me.

1675?

???

I think there are positives for both. Personally, I prefer duals for most applications. They're not hard to synch, either. They're actually easier than single carbs in some ways.

Its best to match the carb for what you are going to do with it. For rough off roading a single works better. You can use a Solex single up to a 1776 with a mild cam like an Engle 100. WEB Camshafts has cam profiles for single Solex carbed small displacement engines. For street and sand duals work better. Do you have a particular use in mind? My off road engine and street/Glamis engine are very similar except one has a single 32 mm Zenith carb and the other 48 IDA's. There is a 2.4 second difference in 1/4 mile times. Fuel injection would solve that. It is worth considering if you do not have carbs yet.

What fuel injection system do you recommend at a reasonable price?

Thats a good question. I have never tried FI due to owning a large selection of carbs. If you are building your own Hal Tech and Mega Squirt seems the way to go. CB Performance, Competion Engineering, Gene Berg, Redline, Turbo City etc supply ready made systems. If I was just starting out with VWs today an adaptive system combining Ignition and Fuel that could make changes for altitude and octane would be my first choice for a performance engine.

Not enough to justify selling it. It should be kept as a back up.

Emissions test for one and other problems like rust in a cylinder, theft, not want to sell the nicer engine with the vehicle come to mind.
