Nothing keeps sand out of the shroud. You would need a huge air filter that could move 1200 cfm and not clog up. A chicken wire cover is sold to keep out twigs, fingers, rags, etc. Keeping sand out of your generator, distributor and carb are more important. Expensive ($300.00) UMP air filters work the best. On a budget a well oiled KN covered by two foam Outer Wears works fair. They will need cleaning once a day at the Dunes. Grease where the filters meet the housings. I also oil the outer foam filter. A small piece of foam glued to the distributor vents helps keep out sand. Sand kept getting in my points at Glamis and stalling the engine. I oiled a shop rag and tied it to the bottom of the distributer. Lo tech but it worked. The next time I went to the dunes I swapped the points for a Pertronix unit. The rag is still there. A crankcase vent filter, press in sand seal and sand pulley will keep sand out of the crankcase.

Get the UMP filter and install the pulley sand seal. I have not seen a seal kit for the distributor.

Foam glued over the vents and black tap for the cap to body work well. My points stayed clean with just the oiled rag tied around the bottom of the distributor base covering the vent holes.
