I noticed that stock motors dont like the gas pedal. I was in a pickle and rapped it up going over a deep silt covered hill with holes, and I was spinning, revving it full throttle. I broke a valve spring, and I replaced it, but now im down 2 cylinders. Laughing So It has spark, i put new spark plugs in it, has 60 psi compression, valves adjusted.

So im thinking a bent valve. Ive been thinking of going 1641cc, and do a very good P&P (mainly polish) on my SP heads. I am not rich, so I cant afford a carb yet. Ill barely be able to afford a 1641 P/Cs, & valves.

So;
1641cc kit, new valves, valve seats, & springs., and P&P and then sandblast the heads.

ive heard from many that SP has more lower end torque then DP. Not sure if its true, but ive had 5 smart guys tell me that!

Are you rock crawling or do you want power? Better power below 1500 RPMs does nothing for you. You're better off with a DP set-up, without a doubt. I'd send your smart guys back to school.

If you port a single port head, you'll actually find that your "beneficial" low-end torque actually goes bye-bye anyway. Start with a set of duals and port them. The 1641 thing is not a bad idea, you might gain 1 or 2 horses there, as long as you get breathing better. The head work will gain you another 5 or 6. If you choose the right exhaust, you'll even get more than that. Do things right and you might get 10 total, which is about a 25% increase over stock, measured at the rear wheels.

Keep in mind, though, that you will need carb(s) to get anything more. Once you do that, your power band will need to increase to really see a difference, and that can get expensive.

yeah i had a sp 1500 and it wasnt that great, was less hp and torque than the 1600 dp i have now

The spring was probably defective. You could just lap in a couple of new valves. Install heavy duty single springs and retainers just to be safe. Can't keep your foot out of it? Use a rev limiting rotor for a Bus or Porsche 914. Then buy parts as soon as you get the money and stockpile them until you are ready. Seriously just not buying fast food, soda and beer can net $100-200 a month or more for your VW. It works I convinced several customer to do it and have done it myself. Build a 1776 single port with the stock heads, rejetted carb, stock cam, use an in and out full flow oil pump with an oil filter and the cheap oil cooler kit (just check the hose clamps often). If you could drive the 1776 vs the 1641 you would agree. I have also used the Engle 100 cam, and modified the intake to accept a Weber progressive carb. While really ultra low budget these 1776 combinations work really well for considering the cost. You could go 1915 since all forged Cima/Mahle P&L kits are about the same price. A cw crank would be nice but not mandatory since you are not turning a lot of rpms.
You should be able to find a used cheap oil cooler kit dirt cheap on one of the VW forums same with the progressive carb since most people don't want them. The Empi version in and out pump is $50.00. I have bought some dyno time only P&Ls for half price.

I got a oil cooler/filter kit but its not full flowed yet. I dont have the time to tap the case and most people say you must split the case to clean it . Thats a whole new thing for me/my dad.

I do want a 1776. My dads friend had a 1776 manx with a 11lb? flywheel that beat our 1835 12lb flywheel, near same carb setup and all. We had a heavier cage ,but he 1776 really rapped out and the 1835 didnt have that feel to it!

If you want want REAL low end torque, buy a Supertrapp or a knock-off and install it without any discs in it. You'll have a TORQUE MONSTER!

That's effectively what you're doing with a single port head, only on the intake side, rather than the exhaust.

I think i got a bent valve, I gotta tear out the motor today. I hook up the air compressor to the valve and it leaks out the carb, any degree on the pulley (TDC, BTDC, etc) So im tearing off motor, and heads, and gonna sand blast some other SP heads I got, and put all the good valves/springs I got on.

Its better its only one head. See Gene Bergs article for drilling and tapping for full flow on the car.

Im buy new valves, springs, rings (they didnt seat right, by P/O), Maybe lifter.

And ill check the Full FLow kit!

If your going with new lifters try a Engle 100 cam.

If new lifters, you are splitting the case and you might as well drill and tap for full flow.
