hey i just found your forum by doing a google search. i've been researching baja bugs for a while and now its time to make one of my own...i'm not to much of a car guru...so i figured i'd come and bug you guys for some advice and such. i guess my first question is there somewhere that kinda gives a basic outline of normal mods and such to get the baja bug going? nothing super crazy, just basic baja bug...

thanks

jonny

Id start with a clean little vw and turn it into a baja.

I think the cheapest way to go is a 1 piece front end for 330? and put stock front fenders on rear and cut them. and get bumpers. And a nice air filter and tires.

yea, i got the perfect place. right here.
look at all the projects and builds and get a good outline from there.

advice:
NO SUPER BEETLES!!
link pin front is best, ball joint is second best(front suspension)
IRS is best in the back, swingaxle is second best(rear suspension)
65 and earlier, link/swingaxle cars
66-68, ball joint and swing axle.
69 threw 78? IRS/ ball joint

Swaps can be done to make a link pin/IRS car.

Balljoints will work, so will swing axle
super beetles will not.

Big tires are cool
Dual prot engines are better that Single port
Welcome to the forum, guys will chirp in ina bit.

And when you get the car, POST PICTURES!

just avoid 66- 68 for the best part! i know guys run them but..... for a beginner its eaiser to start with a easer project! best starting point would probally be a 69-78 bug better motor better trans and better rear susp!

next word of advise buy a welder and pratice on any piece of metal you can find i dont care what you make but be ready to cut it apart and start over! the best toys are built not bought so best to learn on a pratice project rather than your toy!

Swing axle is better if your a all terrain man! Less parts to break.
IRS is better for jumps and baja'n!

I'd have to say that you need three things to start:

1. A VW bug
2. A saw
3. A welder

With those three things, you can accomplish damn near anything.

(Spray paint helps, too, sometimes)

Welcome aboard! Bug us until you puke! We love this stuff!
