ok when i bought my bug (the first of two) it came with a roof rack(pictured below) well i had the thought of fabbing up some brackets and mounting two amber leds on the rear and one red high mount brake lamp led in the center. also putting 4 6inch kc daylighter style lights on the front maybe some white leds on the side for camp/pit lights. has anyone seen this done? does it seem like it would be a good starting point for a light roof rack....

TIA
Chad

Seems a bit flimsy for off-road use. Keep in mind that there's bushes and brush and such that may be whacking into the thing fairly regularly (depending on your use). Also, a way of encapsulating the lights to protect them from branches and such would be a good idea also.

Take a look at this thread. Swine is currently testing a prototype bolt-together/drip-rail mount rack made of square tubing that he is considering mass-producing and selling. Could be shipped easily, as it comes in several different pieces. He claims less than $200, and would probably be a much better starting point for what you're considering.

Just my .02.

Plus, you could probably sell the rack you have currently to some street-dude and considerably offset the cost of the better one...

me2. I'm sure he paid good $ for that light bar, but I would angle mine back instead of forward so the branches slide up and over my lights more easily, maybe even matching the angle of the windshield would look good.

if you look close at that rack and compare it to the lines of the one that cam with my car it looks like the same one just looks like he added the light bar..... but i cant be sure. guess i will just have to reinforce the rack i have toss some lights on it and see what happens

the luggage rack definitely looks like a stock rack. The light bar I've seen for sale, but they weren't cheap. It looks like he just added some support rods with heim joints to connect the light bar to the luggage rack, same thing the racers do.

That is the same Half inch tube rack I use on my baja. The light bar is an add on. Home made etc. Make sure the lights are far back on your car. if the light/shine gets into your front window you will never see out side your car at night.

or....

My son will trade you one of my racks for your street rack. He has a 67 and he's been looking for a street rack. His grandparents live on West Covina so a swap wouldn't be hard..
