I know there's a sticky on this on the EFT board, but we haven't really discussed it for awhile. I had everything out while trying to install my compressor under the passenger's seat, so I unzipped it all and snapped a couple of photos.

I carry three canvas bags of stuff that fits behind my passenger's seat between the battery and the seat for emergency supplies. I also carry two quarts of oil and a pint of brake fluid there. What's not pictured is my fire extinguisher (mounted right behind the driver's seat), and my 24" 5000 lb. jack (under the passenger's seat).....

Bag #1.....

Spare parts and gear:
Clutch cable
Throttle cable
Plug Wire
Coil WIre
Alternator belt
15' of 14 gauge wire
Duct Tape
Zip Ties
Can of Fix-a-Fat
3 Emergency Flares
Jumper Cables
Spare alternator pulley
Bungee cords
Silicone sealant
Fuel filter
Spare fuses and wire terminal assortment
009 complete with elect ignition
Lighter
CV bolts
Hose clamps
Coil
Tow strap
Electrical tape
Ratcheting tie down

Bag #2....

Air compressor with hose. There's also a tire gauge in there that I forgot to take out. This comes in handy every time I go out to air up the tires after I air them down to 15 PSI hit the trails.

Bag #3....

Assorted tools and TWO flashlights

Maybe it's overkill, but I'm getting home some way, some how, if I break down. If not, I'm not gonna die trying!

I used to carry a spare CV, too, but I haven't picked one up yet since I witched to 930's.

How funny!

I literally laughed, not because it's pathetic, but because thats amazing.

I dont know if thats an emergency kit as much as it's a ... survival kit.

Minus the water and MRI's you're set for a while.

Very nice!

All that plus a longblock, trans minus axles, gen or alt. with fan attached, carb and kit, 2 spare tires mounted, wheel brngs, seals, pushrod tubes, JB weld, clutch and t.o. brng, bowden tube....
Granted some of that like the longblock and trans were in busses, but the other was always with me in bajas.
Then again, I took trips of around 1000 miles each way.
And yes, I've changed most all that stuff(except the engine and trans)on the side of the road.
Remember, Father Muir said many a vw starts a trip running poorly, but ends up so fine!

It's tough to find the balance between too much and too little. It seems no matter what you bring, something different night break.

That's the idea of sharing here nuke. And if you breakdown and I have what it take to fix your car, I consider that just as important. It wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last that I was able to help a brother out.

Pretty close to the kit I run.

Not as many of the tools (especially duplicates), but most of the spares, I also carry a medkit and a blanket.

I decided that I needed to carry a spare throttle cable when mine broke out in eastern borrego, on a weekday, 6 miles from the nearest paved road. I was able to fix it, but not until after I threatened my girlfriend (now wife) that she may have to lean out the back to actuate the throttle.

here's a tip from the side of the road....
cut the ends off extra throttle cables, the carb end. Cut about 3 inches or so before the tip. Pack that piece with at least 1 extra barrel retainer(or whatever you want to call the piece the cable is captured in the linkage by)in a piece of duct tape and throw it in the kit/glovebox. When your cable snaps at the carb, instead of crawling around threading your new cable in at the pedals(which will always happen during the rain or snow so your floor is nice and wet)you can just attach the broken cable to the extra piece!

...or you can tie a knot in it and splice it to a shoelace....

When it breaks on the other side, just take off both shoelaces, tie them together, and run them out the window to your carb. I had to do that a couple of months ago. I was only a couple of miles from home, so it seemed much easier than threading a new cable.

I drove to work and back for a few days (years ago) with a pair of shoestrings. I actually got quite good at it.
