I'M SO CONFUSED.

hahaha I'm just looking around online at all the paints available.

I've come to the conclusion that i know basically NOTHING about painting a car. Cool

My knowledge is very limited as of now and I need/want to greaten' it.

So far i know:

*Filler
*Primer
*(reducers, catalyst, hardeners, etc) WTF?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
*Base coating
*(reducers, catalyst, hardeners, etc) WTF?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
*Clear coating
*(reducers, catalyst, hardeners, etc) WTF?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

Twisted Evil Razz Embarassed Confused Surprised

I guess my best bet is to find someone locally that knows what their doing and talk to them about it. I would love to do the paint job myself, i think it would be an awesome experience. I just need to know more about it.

Who would you talk to in Oro Valley, or the surrounding areas? I'm looking for someone locally (N or NW side of Tucson) that knows more than i do and can get me pointed in the right direction. Smile

Im sure bajawarrior will agree, buy ppg paint, its only a few $$$ more that the cheap stuff and the quality is 50 times better and the paint will not oxidize like the cheap stuff, not to mention the cheap stuff is usually thin and takes several coats and the ppg will cover in a maximum of 2 coats.

For the primer you should use a catalized filler primer, so you will need primer, catalist, & reducer.

For the paint you have several options, but the cheap route that will work for most bajas is to go single stage. Then you just need paint, hardener, & reducer.

If you go to your local PPG paint dealer just ask for the PPG Omni paint, its the low budget paint but still good quality.

I know i should probably sand the whole thing, but I think it would be 10x easier to sand blast the thing.

Should i sand blast it, sand the metal smooth and then use and etching primer?

Or is that "illegal"

Sand blasting works fine. Keep the gun at a 45 degree angle to the steel so it does not make dents. You can prime right over the sand blasted steel after you metal prep it. Five star makes a ureathane direct to metal primer that can be reduced at different rates, It can also be used for primer surfacer and primer sealer. (Space Age Paints in Mesa sells it. I believe they sell also PPG.) In the past I wouls use Duponts Variprime bare metal paint followed by primer surfacer but the last few jobs I have used DTM primer.

Cool. Smile

I called down at Pro-1 here in tucson, and the guy said sandblasting works. He was just concered about the cost of getting it blasted - i'm doing it myself.

He recomended i spray an epoxy primer to cover all of the "dents" from blasting up.

So after blasting is that all i need?

Primer
Then Paint
Then Clear Coat

or am i needing to do something to prepare the metal?

When it comes to thinning or reducing.. what do i need to know, or is that something you just learn about by doing?

Try to do as much welding shrinking and metal finishing before sand blasting. Use Dupont Metal Prep and follow the instructions. I use the DTM and ureathane primer since the last time I used epoxy primer (Dupont Colar) It took two men and a small boy to sand it You may want to find adult body shop course at a trade school. EVIT used to offer them for $300.00. Eastwood sells an old school body work book thats into metal work. The paint shop can supply you with techical material about the piant products you will be using. There are some good sticky articles on The Samba. I have seen videos offered on the internet. Try Google. Just take your time. I spend 200-300 hours on most of my basket case projects. This is a back yard project that still has at least 20 hours to go.

I bought 7 quarts of mismatched Valspar acrylic enamel for $75.00. Even cheap paint can look great. The paint I really wanted cost $450.00.

Man that looks pretty good how it is!

You're saying you have at least 20 more painting hours to go?!
