I'm so freakin mad. About a year ago, long before my build was done, I bought a new TRW steering box thinking that would cure the slop in my steering. Now that the car's finally running, I still got all kinds of slop, about 3 inches of play with a small steering wheel! I bought it so long ago and tried adjusting it so they won't take it back. Anyone know where to get a german box? Do they still offer them? I don't trust those Brazilians.

i got rid of my old steering box because it was leaking all over my garage. bought a new trw from bap...the stinking now leaks and its only about a year old... Evil or Very Mad

to your trouble, on the top of the box theres a large nut with a flat head screw sticking through it, loosen the nut and turn the screw in a little at a time checking to see if that cures your slope problem...it works on my old box...

Mine's leaking oil too. Mad I read up on it and tried adjusting. It makes it harder to turn the wheel but does not ellinimate the slop. The tie rod ends are old and the ball joints are new. I believe the slop is in the box cuz if I reach in and grab a hold of the steering shaft, I can twist it back and forth without moving the pittman arm. So the slop is there before it gets to the tie rods.

Some boxes have an adjuster nut on the front.

You should check your shaft coupler also. Todd

Before I went with the chevy box I took a new TRW box and a German one and combined the parts using the TRW and german one and came up with a pretty decent one, though still not tough enough, it will work.

The coupler is a new urethane one. Does anyone know of someplace that rebuilds german steering boxes or has a stash of NOS ones?

WHOA nukeworker! Back up. First, be sure it has lubrication, then make sure the steering box is centered INTERNALLY before you try to determine whether the box is good or not. You can do this by disconnecting it from the tie-rods and the coupler (to column), then put a small vise-grip on the input shaft and turn it lock-to-lock while counting turns. Go back halfway (center), then while holding the vise-grip steady, grab the pitman arm and check it for play. Also check for in & out movement of the input shaft - that would indicate a bad wormshaft bearing. If you can feel play at the pitman arm (but no in & out wormshaft movement) AT CENTER, then, loosen the nut on top and slowly screw in the "adjuster" screw while turning the input shaft back & forth past center untill you feel a little resistance when you pass center. Then back off the screw enough so you can "barely" feel center and tighten the jam nut while holding the screw. Now re-check for play etc. If it's feeling better, then adjust tie rods etc. to the box at center. Only at center does any type of (serviceable) steering "box" have no play. Then move on to tie rod ends, wheel bearings etc. Sorry about the novel length tutorial, but I used to remanufacture steering boxes for a living and that's how you set 'em up. If the box still feels like garbage after all that, something is bent, broken or missing (as in disintegrated).

I did make sure it was centered before I installed it. I tried all the adjustments. All they seem to do is make it tighter. The play is still there. I think I got a bad box. Mad

Been away from this forum for a while. Just wanted to let you guys know what the issue was in case it happens to you. It was the clamp that goes on the end of the steering shaft, the one you bolt the steering coupler to. The splines inside of it were smooth allowing it to slip back and forth.

So how did you resolve that issue? Replace the clamp?

Yeah, the splines on the steering shaft were fine. Must be stronger metal than the clamp.
