I just bought the "Baja Bugs and Buggies" book on your recommendation. Very informative. I bought the "How to Keep Your VW Alive Forever For Idiots"...but it doesn't help with modifications at all.

I was told that you need a conversion kit of some kind to use a bus motor in a bug...that's not correct?

I bought my bug on Craigslist. I see them there all the time. When you go to your area's homepage, just search for "baja".

"how to keep your vw alive" helps with maintenace of the vw. mods are not its thing. factory wiring diagram, torque specs, "how to" service engine, trans, and the lot.

great book to have!!

my edition of it is from 1983 or so. it was spiral bound too! I trimmed the edges and put evey page in a sleeve then in to a 3" D ring binder. no more oil pages! Very Happy

I even have room to add pages from the internet or what have ya.

What I couldn't find in any of my books was a black "thing" on the inside of the trunk that had tubes connected to the gas filler neck.

Anyone know what that is? I am in the middle of ripping everything out and rewiring it.

Carbon canister. It's for emissions.

Oh...ok. Thanks.

Just another piece I can throw away, then! This rewiring is kicking my butt. I can't tell which end is supposed to be in the front of the car and which to the rear.

Oh, well.

Did you buy a prepackaged harness? Don't throw that canister away if you have to do an emissions test. Here is BajaBen's rewire:
azbaja.com/Forums/view...EWIRE.html

Hope that helps a little. Also an oem wiring diagram can't hurt. If you don't have one: vintagebus.com/

Axen: avoid my BIG mistake! Check latest year model exempt from emissions testing. After that, the later, the better (except SuperBeetles). Later gets you: Syncro 1st gear, I.R.S., bigger (stock) engine. Although some would say irs isn't important, ball jt. front is weaker, seems to depend who you talk to. Synchro 1st is a must in my humble opinion!

Newbie that recently joined. I have a 1968 that I am converting into a Baja. So far, I have cut off the rear end and mock fitted everything. Over the three day weekend, I will cut the front and mock fit all of those items. Thhis will be my first Baja, so I am excited about building it, but also a little nervous. My other Bug is a 72 Super. I live in the Tampa Bay area.
