Howdee all,
What ideas did y'all come up with for passenger access to the back seat of your Baja's? I've got 5-point belts so that complicates it a wee bit.
Looking for ideas to ponder while I sit here at work. Rolling Eyes
Thanks

Ya, I saw those. My seat bolts to the cage and I wasn't looking at cutting the cage to re-attatch it to the floor. Plus there's the prob of the 5-points coming out of the holes in the seats every time you tip it.
Interested to see what intersting engineering people came up with. Cool

Sample, how do you keep that cross-pin latch in place? Cotter pin?

Sample...

I'm REALLY liking that set up. It's clean, neat, simple, and well designed.

However, a lot of us are running high back seats. When the seat tilts forward, it soon hits the ceiling. This severely limits the amount of seat travel for us "High Backers" and makes it fairly impossible to get to the rear seat easily. I have mocked up a set-up for years and years that would be able to both tilt the seat, and slide it forward easily. It's a real pain in the ass, and I've never personally been able to get it to work successfully myself.

The problem is compounded by the fact that I run 5 point harnesses on the front seats. When the seats are tilted that far forward, the buckles on the harnesses will not clear the seat through the length of travel. I've tried to fasten the harness directly to the passenger's seat, and this certainly makes it an easier problem to solve, but there is a trade-off for the passenger's safety that I wasn't willing to sacrifice. I gave this quest up years ago, figuring I'd eventually get back to it if I needed to. Since then, my kids are both 6' tall and they don't fit in the back, so for me it's a mute point for now. I've got a 1 year old and one more in the oven now, so I may need to revisit this in a few years.

I'd love to see someone solve this.

The way I've run mine for years is I have two angle steel pieces bolted to the seats. I welded two 1"x2" steel tubing pieces to the seat bases. I have two long pins (1/2" diameter x approximately 12" long) that run through holes in the two abovementioned parts and pin it all together. When my kids were smaller, I'd just remove the seat when I dropped them off at school in the baja. I got some strange looks, but it worked OK.

It might work, if we put the hinge/pivot point farther back from the front edge.... Hmmm... (Pondering...)

If the pivot point is near the center of the base, near where the lap belts come through, they may not pull out of the seat. I think we're just screwed on the shoulder belt though. Mine wraps around a roll cage bar that goes behind the seats. Maybe a latch on the back side of the shoulder harness, behind the seat? Unsnap it when you fold the seat forward so the belt goes with the seat?

I used to actually wrap the shoulder harness around the two slats in the back of the seat itself, and fasten it that way. When you do that, the shoulder harnesses stay attached to the seat. My biggest concern was that in the event of a head-on collision, the seat would be the only thing holding the passenger taught. I worry about if it would hold a 200 lb person without tearing off the base.

I got some seats from the junkyard out of a two door ford escort. They're comfortable and the backs tilt forward for access to the back seat area.

DAMN!
57, you've got me wondering now. I liked "samples" set up so I took off with that. Some thing similar any way. Each car seems to present different needs I think so I adjusted to my needs. I got high backs so I'm wondering if they'll tilt w/o hitting. At leat all I'm concerned about is small children (relatives) and a big poodle as all our kids are grown up,,,,woo-hoo!
I'm not sporting 5-points,,,,,yet. I'm just a "wanna-be".... Very Happy
