What kind of a job is it to put short axles in place of long axles. I want to put bigger tires on the rear but they hit. I have a 69 baja.

I imagine you are talking about running 31" tires or bigger. The torsion bars on your car are the longer bars I also imagine. If you want to run larger tires and keeping it somewhat reasonable pricewise, (ie..not 3x3 trailing arms) you would need to replace the rear torsion bars, spring plates and spring plate covers.
Here is a great how to including what you are looking at.

31x10.5 is a good size tire for a VW baja.

I am actually building this car for my son. He just turned 16 and this is going to be his first car. It has a stock engine. The whole idea is to put big tires so that he CAN'T go very fast. No back seat for a lot of freinds to ride and distract him. Roll bar will see to that. $ speed trans to keep him off the phone and he will have the only Baja around here. This car is pretty low budget though and I thoght if there was an inexpensive way to change the torsion tbes than I would. I didn't think so. By the way, how can I post a picture on here?

even with that size tire, he'll probably go faster in 3rd than 4th on any kind of incline.

I took seats out of a 1996 Eclipse and welded VW tracks to the seat frame. They are the perfect height and width for a Bug. I have shoulder harnesses for L&R and will tie them into the rollbar.
As far as going fast down hill, there really arent any here. OR mabey I will install a Jake Brake.

Yes, blind chicken racing makes them along with others. Bugzylla has them on the class 5 car he is building.

Nicol, I think you have some great ideas to keep him out of trouble. The next thing is to take out the radio, so he can keep an ear on the engine!

It does'nt even have a radio. I told him the sound of a good running VW engine is music all in itself. I think he wanted to tell me to kiss his ass, but did'nt. Hell he's lucky his old man is building a cool ride for him right?

OK, Thanks, I will leave the bars alone. I am running 17" wheels on it and the tires are the largest ones that will fit. I'm going with all 4 the same size so that he can save money and rotate them regularly.

Don't you have to move the trans back with arms that long? I thought I'd heard that 3x3 was about as long as you wanted with the trans in stock position... ???
