I have been in and out of this site for a few weeks now any I think it is a great site and have learned much useful information and ideas. I have been into bajas for about 7 years now and I am still lovin it. I live in Redding, Ca, which is where I started by baja project in 2001.
I bought a 56 (already cut, wasn’t me, I promise) with a DP 1600 which had obviously been rolled on to its roof a few times for $800. I made it home after pushing it the last 200ft. This is where my project begins. Bought a second car (a 69 for the trans and IRS) did the conversion and started to put it back together replacing just about every nut, bolt, bushing, seal, etc. Mom did the paint job (she did a great job, cant say the same for my prep work), installed some Toyota Celica seats, new bumpers, new fiberglass and engine rebuild done by Steve Phillips of Wolfgang Int. (he did an awesome job, still runs awesome after 6 years of off road abuse) all new engine components, and a bunch of time and effort. It was on the road (but not finished) a year later.
Then the rear tires began to wear very rapidly due to a camber problem that turned out to be a bent torsion housing. I then bought a complete 64 minus the motor ($250) just for the pan, after tearing this car down I found that the frame head had been totally destroyed and someone tried to attach it with u bolts. Then I come to find a pan sitting in a guys back yard covered in weeds (if it weren’t for the rear shock towers we might not have found it ) he gave it to me for a 12 pack, new tires were next (BFG 31x10.5). Installed a new front beam (6in wider w/10in towers). Then I realize that the 64 that I had purchased had a body that was much straighter than my 56, so I drove the 56 until the 64 was prepped and ready to switch out. The past few weeks I have been working on the cage and cut the front for a one piece. The interior will be coated with black bed liner .I plan to do the cage bumper to bumper, a tank in place of rear seat (at least 20gal), I also want to do a 3x3/930 suspension, not sure whether or not I want to go with coil over. That’s the short story and I'll try to get some pics on here but I don’t see my project but once a week since it is at my friends shop with all the welding equipment. Smile
