I just don't undersatnd how people do it. I mean, I've only driven mine far less than a total of 100 miles off road in just some little area in my city (abandoned air field). I broke my piston rings though. Ok, maybe flying at about 30 on a stretch of land that had the occasional dip causing the front to get some air and coming down hard might have done it. But I just don't understand how a bug is rendered offroad worthy when it couldn't even take what I gave it. How do you, and the pros, beat yours to crap and avoid this stuff? I'm dropping 600+ dollars to fix this and get a new oil cooler. I am very discouraged I mean if it couldn't take that, what can it take? How is this avoided? Suspension upgrade maybe? I dunno please help!

I don't think that being a baja had anything to do with the motor going bad. This could have happened in an everyday driver street car, so I wouldn't get discouraged over the baja yet. Baja's are VERY off road capable and are a blast to romp in. The motor must have had some internal problem that went un noticed, hope you get it back on the road or off road soon and enjoy it. Very Happy Very Happy

I have a Honda Pilot, it has about the same suspension travel as a stock VW bug it rides 100% better than a VW Bug on all types of bumps and jumps, so does the Honda FL350 Odyssey, the version before the Pilot (ATV's NOT SUV's)

IMO the spring rate is all wrong on the VW Bug suspension, its way to stiff for the first 1/3 of the travel making you feel every little bump rock, you can improve this by lowering your air pressure to 15 psi but I dont think tires will last long or stay on the bead at that pressure.

As the suspension reaches the end of its travel the spring rate does not rise enough so you bottom hard.

The Honda Pilot's stock shocks (and springs) share the same character as the VW suspension just not as bad, I cured the Pilot's suspensions by switching to FOX AIR (filled with nitrogen) shocks now my suspension is real smooth and soft over the small bumps and jumps but has a rising spring rate that softens the blow of jumps and bumps as it nears the end of its travel.

When I get caught up on other projects I intend to install FOX AIR shocks on my Baja so I can fine tune the spring rate, I will need to remove spring rate from the stock suspension so the shocks can provide adjustable spring rate.

Give this a read its informative about the 'air shock' www.pirate4x4.com/tech...index.html
I learned over the years most people dont understand the concept of the type of 'air shock' I am talking about they get a metal picture of the 80.00 a pair "air shock" guys use to install on the rear of their cars to jack them up...

I agree with bajawarrior.

How many miles were on the engine? If it was tired to start, well...

Did you over rev it? It is not hard to do when pushing it hard. If the back wheels get off the ground, the revs get high fast when you have it floored!

Rebuild it, and resume raving.

Jeff

I've gone alot of places that 4x4 drivers were amazed to see a VW, and this with stock suspension bugs and busses. It has alot to do with your expectations. I've flown a f'glass buggie over hills, caught air, but that is a much lighter vehicle than a baja. The success rate of getting from point a to point b is dependent upon your course of action. Just my opinion....

I just don't understand because what I did to it the few times we went out is nothing like what some of you describe. It must have been just waiting to break. Well i should be getting it back from the shop today or tomorrow. Thanks guys I'll see what I can do. Frankly, I think it is far from ready to hit the offroad.

Check the baja build project section on chirco.com. I think they used a Bilstein 5100 or something on that car. I'm pretty sure they sell them also...

If your breaking rings or ring lands I'd be checking your tune up for a lean air fuel condition and or igniton timing. And don't forget It's not a race car just because it has some fiberglass on it. It's just a car that in stock form is more a natural and more capable than many in an offroad situation. A mildy built baja can get around very well off road, kind of like a little mountain goat. If you want to go fast off road your going to have to build that car accordingly.

One thing I noticed on the Fox link.
There is no cover on the shocks shaft.
This must lead to problems in my opinion.
I have a Yamaha xt500 build 76 wich on his frontshocks is missing these to.
Newer yamaha's have these from factory.
Stones and such hitting the shaft cause small dents.
When the shock goes inward the rings (dunno the english) crack.
Wich leads to oil leaks.
So get a cover un it is my suggestion.
I have to do this on my yamaha as well. It is leaking oil like hell.

the smooth body nitrogen shocks, work just fine my dad runs fox 2.0 nitrogen smooth body's on his sand rail and fox 2.5 coil overs on the rear and that car rides like a caddy across the desert at highspeed, and small rocks and stones dont quite hurt them like u would think, they hold up fine, im about to put tatum 3x3 trailing arms with vented cross drilled rotors and tatum, 5 lug hubs, as for shocks im goin to run fox 2.0 nitrogen in the front, the rear is goin to be fox 2.0 smooth body shocks in the rear, some good mid travel for a daily driver, that will all be done hopefully by the end of the summer :))))))))
