I got off work a little early today, so I went offroading at a big trail area right by the heliport.

WOW! I had a BLAST! There was some guy out there with a 450cc quad, and I caught up with him, so we ran together for a while, maybe 2 miles....he would pass me, then I would pass him. I was FLYING, about 50mph on really rough tristing trails. Dust was EVERYWHERE! I was hauling ass. Engine screaming with the open exhaust and no windows (I took them out).

At the end, I stopped, and he pulled up next to me and we talked for a while. He was amazed a baja would run that fast - he said I was nuts! Apparently I was airborne more than once.

I considered it a compliment. That car can really haul ass. Man, it was fun! The suspension really takes the rough stuff well, and it's not too fancy, really. Just basic offroad mods.

I know, a lot of you can surely smoke me, but I have to admit, I eally do like scaring the poo out of myself. That's worth some horsepower, right? Shocked

Now I need to drop another $2000 in the suspension, bigger motor.....

ooooooh.

I added a silver swoosh to my checker stripe. Adding contingency stickers soon for the "race car" look.

We NEED to have a Tucson "boonie day" with as many Bajas as possible down here......soon! Cool

Jeff

Well, it's a stock 1600dp as far as I know....that's all the info I got from the PO.

It sure feels faster than my '66, which also was a 1600dp. But this one has a more thoroughly prepped suspension. That makes all the difference.

I am going out Sunday morning (the 20th). I better bolt my skidplate on for that.

You need to move out here, jox.

I am bringing the kids, the van, the towbar, and a cooler of drinks. My brother in law may bring a dirt bike...maybe his buddy's sandrail.

We will be at the dirt park area north of the road leading to Evergreen Air Park. Anyone available? It will be a blast. Sunday around 10 am or noon ....or something like that. Lots of fast trails, and a big dirt/mud bowl, I am told.

Jeff

Right on, klw!

My other 2 bajas were not as capable as this one. I LOVE it. Plus, I am a little more "thrill seeking" than I was back then. You only live once! (plus, I have a roll cage now...LOL)

I wish you could make it out. Everyone is welcome!!

OK, we will be out there arond noon or so. It will be just my bug, but my buddy is bringing his Cherokee...hopefully we won't need it.

It should be a pretty mellow day, taking turns giving rides to the older kids. Just nice to get out of the house. If you go out there, look for a white minivan and a red Cherokee...and my bug.

Go west on Pinal airpark road (exit 232 off I-10), just past the HUGE dirt pile at the gravel pit on the right (north side of the road.)

I'll take pictures.

Jeff

Just got back. We had a BLAST! I have never driven that hard for that long. Both my shoulders hurt from driving fast and twitcy steering for 3 hours straight. I drove the car and took turns giving everyone rides. My brother in law beat his Cherokee prett good. We had so much fun.

My 15 year old son and my 12 year old daughter both drove a car for the first time today, VW is now in thier blood for good! The boy wants a Ghia baja as his first car now. I am so proud.

The only mishap is I went up a blind hill a bit hot, and when I got to the top, I realized I was NOT on the same hill I thought....there was a severe dropoff on the other side. Shocked

Stopped in time, though. LOL. Whew!

My brother in law now wants a baja.

Mission ACCOMPLISHED.

My son driving for the first time.

Up this hill....

And almost down the HARD way!

Jeff
