I knew you would read this one!

We've talked about this before, but I wanted to stress it once again, as safety is of the utmost importance.

I was fabbing up some mounts for my rear bumper the other day when I started a fairly decent sized fire while welding underneath it. It wasn't the kind of fire that you could just puff out, and it was right underneath my gas tank! Thankfully, I had a fire extinguisher handy and put it out right away. Everything is cool. Nothing got damaged.

I just wanted to post a reminder that we all need to spend a little extra time to prepare a safe working environment when we're working on our dreaded beasts.

Makes you think about safety doesn't it?!
We were welding under my high school buddies 57 chevy(backed into the garage) with dads arc welder trying to attach the coil springs to the axle housing. This was a old cheap trick to "jack up" the back end of your car... One guy of course sitting on the trunk lid, myself leaning against the work bench. My buddy slid out from under the car and touched the arc to the gas tank, which was full of course. Instant flames all over the floor, his helmet. Fortunately the flames followed the stream down, not up to the tank itself. He had sense enough to run and jump into the car, which for once started instantly. The flames followed to the start of the dirt drive then quit. We had a aerosol can fire extinguisher from the boy scouts. Whew!! Talk about some terrified teenagers. We chewed some gum and put it on a sheetmetal screw to plug the leak. Then we went cruising. Sometimes life slaps you in the face with a warning and you think it's a love peck from your mom. Shocked

Everytime I weld, grind, cut... anything that will generate sparks I always have a extinguisher close to me. Also all my fuel containers are sealed and away from any heat source, spark, and electricity.

Heard and seen too many fires started due to open flames, welding, and sparks.

That's a great story.
I too also have a extinguisher handy.
And also secure the car when its lifted before going under.
When I have the wheels of I always throw them under de car as an extra security.

I have Fire bottles all over the house and 1 in my baja too. When I work on any fuel lines were I might spil gas etc. I always run the hose over next to the car with a sprayer on the end and the water on. I also run water over every thing when I'm done just to remove gas the might of spilled on the engine or ground.

I feel like a total rebel. Welding in floorpans without goggles or fire extinguisher! Razz
We have a extinguisher about 10 ft away in my garage tho.

fun is having a floor lift fall while you're looking up at the bottom of the car....even if it is only 4" to the safety.
or having the bottle jack fall as you sit crosslegged in front of the rear brake drum, which lands a few inches from your family jewels, saved by the wheel and tire you threw under the car as a "jack stand"...trapping your legs under the leaf springs just enough to remind you what a nincompoop you are even at 50.

I bet we all have stories of "almost ate it doing things unsafely" (is that even a word?) I'll keep mine to myself as they may incriminate me as "not the sharpest tool......." Embarassed

Gotta think safety at all times. It's the shortcuts that get us in trouble.

hopefully this thread got a lot of viewers, damn good reminders up here ^^^^^ and one of my own: do NOT use cinder blocks as jack stands... it REALLY doesnt matter how many you put under there... they WILL break, (rear diff. on my chevy rested less than 2inches from my forehead)

Nope, it doesn't stop. But it doesn't hurt as much because age deadens your skins nerves....

Jacked my 735i (4900 lbs curb weight) up with the factory jack in the dirt while trying to check out my brakes. Came back with a star to take the wheel off and as i bent down to take the center cap off, CRICCCKK.. SLAM.. the jack slipped and the car fell... Good thing im paranoid about that kind of stuff and always make about 3 safety fallouts just in case. Since i wasnt going under the car i didnt take usual precautions, a mistake that might have had consequences..
