So, I think I'd like to put a GPS unit in my baja, both for off-road use, and also to have on when driving around town to use as my speedometer, etc.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably-priced model that they like? I've got TONS of GPS experience, but it's all with aviation-related systems, so I know NOTHING about the spiffy little hand-held ground use jobs.

Ideally (if possible), I'd like to mount it to my overhead crosstube (hanging down) of my cage, put an external low-profile antenna on the roof of the car, AND hard wire it into the car for power.

Thanks!

I just have a little Garmin Rino, it is handheld with a FRS radio built in. I need to make a little mount for it, though. My speedo is WAY off now!

I have the Garmin Zumo 550. The 450 and 550's are designed for the motorcyclists but you can get a car mount as well. The 550 came with MC (handle bar) and auto mount (suction cup). The point about it's design around mc's is that it can take a little more shock and they're water resistant. The 450 runs around $300 and the 550 around $400 depending on when/where you buy.
I love my 550 and take it every where I go, car or mc. I plan to get an extra mount for the Baja when that's finished.

GPScity (online) has lots of cradles and ball mounts that make mounting these things easy.

Bushnell makes at least one model (under $300 I think) that does this "overlay" trick where you can load arial photos like from Mapquest or Google Earth from your computer and put U.S.G.S. or road maps right on top of the arial photos! I've seen 'em work, they'e really cool! Don't know about speedo part.

I posted a thread on this a couple of months ago. I had the same idea of putting it in the overhead area. That meant I would have to run an external antenna. I also wanted trail mapping capabilities, waypoint marking (for hunting and fishing), as well as point-to-point street navigation. I couldn't find one that was reasonable that had all of the qualities I was looking for.

I settled for the Lowrance unit shown below. It had everything except the external antenna jack (and a big screen), and was reasonably priced (I got mine for $250, and I've seen them cheaper, but I had a gift certificate. I modified the suction cup mount and made a permanent mount for the dash. I also hard wired-it by using a using a car cord that I bought at Best Buy from a Magellan unit (I think). The cord that came with it didn't have a 90 degree plug, and the plug wouldn't fit through my defroster vent. I tucked the wire underneath my windshield gasket.

It came out pretty nice, and turns on and off automatically when I turn on the ignition. I've used it a bit, and as GPS's go it's OK for street use. Sometimes it takes me on some weird routes. It has a memory card slot and you can buy (or make?) trail maps that are downloadable, and they also have lake map downloads for it, as well.

For the price, it's not bad.

I'm happy with it. It's a good crossover unit with the best of both worlds.

i've been searching for a multi-purpose unit as well. I think it's impossible to find an inexpensive unit that has a nice color touch screen for use in the streets but the dust proof shock durability of the trails. I searched GPS on the samba and found a nice discussion there. I know prices range from $100 to $350 for decent useable models. The best solution may be to have two.
