Went to my Mom's to do some yardwork for her, and on the way home, the bug sputtered (harshly), ran for a block, then croaked. The gas gauge was near "E", so I figured I found the end of the tank! Shook the car, and heard a little gas sloshing...odd. Well, I ran the electric fuel pump, and sloshed the tank, hoping it would suck some up. Started up again...then died.

So I call the wife, she comes over with a gas can 30 minutes later. I dump in about 5 gallons, and take off....only to have it die one block later. WTF?

I figured I'd sucked some crud into the carb, so I took it apart, and cleaned it out. Checked for spark....none at the plug. Ah ha!

Also, none at the coil wire....bad coil.

Got a new one, cleaned out the dizzy cap and rotor and the electronic ignition pickup and the coil brush. Started right up.

I wasted about an hour working the low/dirty fuel theory. I never ran out of gas, it turns out. Sad

At least I have a clean carb now, and of course, finding and correcting the problem is always rewarding!

Coil went out on a VW bug....how odd. (LOL) Smile

Jeff

I carry an extra one in the car, along with a throttle cable, a clutch cable, a belt, and a plug wire, amongst a few other things.

I ditched my points and went to electronic ignition. I do have a spare 009 loaded up with elect ignition, and a cap an rotor on it in my kit, too. Maybe that's overkill. Maybe I should carry a spare 1600, too. LOL

coils seem to be a weak point, had alot of them go out. Plus, I baked one while running a fullbodied bug without rear tin...oil was dripping from the coil, weak white spark. And I carried all the stuff you guys mentioned, plus a carb, pushrod tube(adjustable), and yeah, a spare longblock while traveling in my bus, plus clutch, bowden tube, wheelbrngs, rear axle seal kit....you can pull the engine in a pre68 bus with just a milk crate to support the engine, roll the bus off it...piece of cake. And a bowden tube can be replaced in a NAPA lot while your lady waits.

What do you store these items in, and where in the car? not the 1600 Laughing

I've got a little Craftsman bag with a tool kit, and another one with my spare parts in it. Right now I store the tool kit behind the passenger's seat, between the battery and the seat mount, and the parts kit in front of the passenger's seat at the base.

I've got a big ass subwoofer behind the driver's seat or they'd both be in the back.

I know there's a thread about spare stuff somewhere, and I was actually thinking of starting another one with pictures one of these days.

I stored misc. parts under the rear seat, drivers side. I carried a 560x15 spare laying flat up front, burlap or some kind of bag laying in it, more parts and tools plus a 4way lug wrench big enough to reach inside the 15x8's. Anything can be done...I drove 1000 miles with a spare irs, tool boxes(2), generator and fan, gobs of vw parts, spare heads, a home stereo ,all my clothes and everything I owned in a 66 baja with full cage, glass buckets up front and buggy back seat. Had enough room to shift, that was it.
