Is the spring plate conversion kit for coil overs worth it??
Is it strong enough??

I will also be getting the IRS arm boxing kit and the triple shock mount to go with it.

I'm using these because the have the "bung" on the inside that fits inside the torsion housing. I can't tell from the pic you posted if those do but I believe the others would be stronger. They are from Pacific Customs.

What about this kit?

What should I go with and what kind of shocks would I need for something like this?

It depends on what arms you are going to use what kind of travel, terrain, etc. you will be in. Tell us a little more.

My bad!! FOr now I will just be boxing the stock IRS arms. Terrain will probably mostly sand dunes, but the car will be street legal. Travel wise I would like to get as much travel as possible without spending an arm and a leg. The car is still being built and I am just researching what my options are. I had a sand rail a while ago and the swing plate limited and acutally broke the lower piece of the braket on the torsion housing everytime it hit.

If you are staying with the stock arms the stay with the stock gear get some better shocks (not empi coilovers either) , save up your bucks for those and some longer trailing arms and coil overs.

Besides if you go with the above setup you will have to get coilovers as those will eliminate your torsions.

That is probably the easiest, also you can do the adjustable rear torsion for the rear also but that requires cutting the rear torsion housing.

Yea zx, Leatherneck is right in that the adjustable plates are easiest. I was a little chicken$*%@ in cutting the rear torsion housing for the single adjustable option so I went with the adjustable plates. They are however not real easy to change unless you get the torsion plate tool. Scary stuff here since those bad boys are under some serious load even sitting on the stops.

My buddy had those on his Baja, and then ended up bending them after a while. He removed them, and did what wer did on mine.

On my baja, i have 2.5 Fox Coilovers in the rear, with a SAW spring plates. I still have the Stock Torsion Bars, with no preload on them. If i remove the Coilovers, it will rest about 1/2 from the stops. I been running it this way for 3 years now, with no problem.

You are talking about 2 completely different systems seperated by vast amounts of cash.

The first set, which eliminates the torsion bars, requires coilovers, and would be a complete waste if you elected to stay close to the stock travel setup. Going beyond that would obviously require CVs which could handle the angles, etc. If you are doing this, then just go for it...3x3 trailing arms (or better), long travel coilovers, and so on.

The adjustable spring plates would give you tunability, but travel would still be restricted by the arm setup, torsion bars would be strained and the ride would change as you cranked them, and ultimately, you would still be where you would be with a homegrown torsion bar index without the pain in the ass work.

Now, some of you run torsions with coilovers? How do you select coilovers with the torsion bar factor figured into the coilover rate?

I gess I view coilover and torsion as 2 seperate approaches to the same problem, coilover being the more cost and travel intensive..

Jeff
