I am kinda new to Baja and I am building my first one so I can learn as much as possible about it.
Took me a while but found a '73. Got the body off and I am in the process of changing the floorpans.
I have been reading about front ends and I am more confused than ever.
So I have a few questions for you pros:

What is the difference in link pin, king pin, ball joint, and rack and pinion?

Is it worth keeping the current stock ball joint front I have?

If I was to change it, what should I change it to and whats involved??

What parts are needed for the change??

Thanks for the help in advance.

Congrats on your new Baja. Link pins hold the spindle carriers to the trailing arms and allow the up and down movement. King pins hold the spindle to the carrier and allow the frt wheels to turn. This is called a link and king pin frt end.

You have a ball joint front end, where the ball joints take the place of both sets of pins.

Depending on your plans for abuse, the ball joint is usually fine. It is required in some desert racing classes and is stronger in it's stock form. A link/king pin front end has the ability to allow more travel and has great aftermarket help.

To change from ball joint to link pin involves surgery. Most people cut the frame heads off and weld on a link pin frame head; some cut off the frame head completely and hang the beam on tubes; other people modify the frame head and support the beam w/extra tubes; other people buy a conversion beam from Bugzylla; and some people convert to an a-arm frt end with a kit from a-arm.com.

Confused enough yet? if not let me know and I will muddy the water some more. J/K hope that sheds some light.

Thanks for sheding some light on the subject. It definetly helped.

I am not big at abusing. I go to Oceano Dunes (toned down version of Glamis). Not many places around here, but I will probably be relocating in the future. Hopefully somewhere where there is places to drive.
I guess I will keep the b/j front for now and may be in the future change it.
So what are my options in shocks for the ball joint front?? I have not seen many. or what should be used?

Chiro's has a couple to choose from, I think a bus kyb is the best deal.
