OK-

Already making progress.

Trip to Chirco yielded a double tube rear bumper, light buckets, another set of taillights, and weld on tabs for them.

On the way home, I picked up the one piece front end T_Town Baja found for me on craigslist. The guy had that and one of those whaletail rear fenders, which I did not want. I ended up getting the front end, and some cool cut back racing fenders from the guy for $85 total!

By the way, the car the parts were from is a '55 baja...if anyone needs parts, I'll hook you up. Mostly residue, but there are doors, etc.

Wife: "Why is there a big car part tied to the roof rack of my van?"
Me: "Because that is the only place it would fit."
Wife: "sigh..."

Well on my way. I also bought sandpaper and white primer...by the time the weekend is over, it will look like another car.

WOOHOO.

I got the tail, funny no semiphores on that 55????

Cool - what did he charge you for the tail?

Yeah, that '55 was interesting. It looked like it may have been a pretty nice car at some point. The front bumper interested me until I realized it was welded to the beam and likely weighed 300 lbs.

I dug those little rear fenders out of the pile of junk in the baja...I was going to grab the rooftop scoop oil cooler too, but it was pretty wasted.

I don't think it ever had semiphores. Odd. I don't know much about those.

Jeff

Jeff -

Looking good mang!

Not sure when you are looking to get the front on, but this coming Saturday I free for most the day. I can run down to my dads shop and grab the sawzall and the smaller welder.... Head over to my place and get that front cut up and mount the 1-piece.

I will give you a ring later this week so I can come check it out.

Just let me know.

Blaine

(PS your working to fast on it, now your making me pressured to put mine back together - LOL)

Yeah, so you see through my plan! I am trying to force you to get yours back on (off?) the road. LOL

I would be farther along, but I have to at least acknowlege my family periodically. My wife plans on working a few hours Saturday, but I may have some time...otherwise I am free all day Sunday. I also want to weld that rear cage to the mounts until we can tie it into the cage, it rattles too much. It's just hanging on there pretty much.

I'll give you a call later.

jox, thank you very much - I consider that a big compliment!

It will stay painted just like it is until it is where I want it to be mechanically. And that's a LONG way off! I am going to do the interior the same, and the bars and cage silver. But that's as fancy as I will get....plus a bunch of racing stickers if I can find some!

Jeff

OK, made some more progress.

I installed (temporarially) the great seats I got from 1FASTHOE...man, thanks so much. I owe you free beer when we get together!

I washed the covers and installed them on the stock VW rails. A little low, but I will improve it when I upgrade my mounting job.

I more solidly installed the engine cage, now I will take it offroad without worrying!

I painted about 2/3 of the interior (poorly). But again, it's not about perfection, just trying to make it not be a disgusting pile 'o crap. It looks much better now. Painted all the tubing silver, and the interior white.

Also painted the brake drums...the PO put them on as raw metal. I just don't get it. They were rusted to hell. 5 bucks for a can of spray paint? Looks 100% better now.

This weekend the 1 piece front goes on...and I may do the rear re-index, and notch the spring plates. It just sits too low in the rear...and the front beam needs about 6 more inches of width, pronto.

Jeff

Thanks, Rob! It is mostly cosmetic, but what a difference some attention can make after years of neglect.

Dan, It is mostly blood, sweat and tears. I paid $1500 cash, and have put about $500 or so into it. The front end, headlight buckets, and another pair of tail lights (not installed yet), about $200 or so. The rear cage, just over 100, and paint, nuts, bolts, more paint, and sandpaper, etc. It truly is a budget car at this point.

Mind, of course, I found a very good platform to start with.

I know where there is a decent starting point car for about $1500, but it is balljoint/swingaxle. and needs work.

Jeff
