I got a 1600cc I'm thinking about like just upgrading the pistons to an 88mm.... SO I dont even have to tear down the motor all the way ..Or even a higher lift cam.. Any Idears?? Or maybe should I just stay with the way i have it?

Run it till it breaks, put together a rebuild savings, save up for the rebuild.

I agree with what he said ^^^^^^^. Is it a single or dual-port motor? Hopefully it's a dual-port. When you overhaul it, go with the big-bore AND the cam. What do you have for a carb? That's another potential upgrade. In fact, that may be something you could get some performance improvement out of now with the current motor, and it'd help your new motor as well. Lots of used VW carbs around for reasonable prices...

Oh, and one more thing- PICS PICS PICS PICS PICS!!!!! (of your car) Laughing

As they said realy, unless you know someone with a motor that they dont need anymore and then you can strip down and rebuild that thats what im doing.

You can get a set of 87's and toss 'em in, but you'll get only marginal (at best) gains. I wouldn't do 88's. Like 350 said, get a set of carbs. I've had GREAT luck with Kadrons over the years. If you put on a set of bigger jugs, you may as well port your heads while you have them off, and they will breathe much better than stock. But Bill Fisher's VW book and it will help a TON with that. Talk about FREE horsepower, porting your heads will take many hours of tedious work, but it won't cost you a dime if you have a dremel in your toolbox. A good exhaust system is perhaps the best investment you can make for adding horsepower. On a stock engine, ratio rockers can add a bunch of horses, too.

Stay away from the cam for now. There are much better investments that will give you more bang for your buck and less headaches.

...All of this advice is predicated on the assumption that you have a good strong motor to start with. Otherwise, find a good motor first.
