There are many schools of thought on this. The best set up is a link pin front end with an IRS rear end. But VW never made it. It is easier to fab a link pin fron to an IRS bug (68 up) but if it needs to go through emissions (evil gov) you should find a pre 67 (66 and older) and convert it to IRS.

I have heard of mexi beetles with link pin fronts, and IRS rears, But never seen one. But otherwise I go for the 66 and earlier and convert them to IRS. Chirco sells the weld in IRS brackets for $25 a set.

Stay away fromthe 67, like mine. You have ball joint front to conver to an link pin and a swing axle to conver to a IRS, not the best choice Smile either side ou only have to convert one end, older is a plus if you stat has emmisons etc.

look at it this way.

here in AZ, if its 1967 or OLDER, there is no emissions. just registration -ccheap too.

so you have 2 ways to be torn now.

in PA, are there emissions exceptions based on year?

Kevin, 67 has to go through emissions also, so its 66 and earlier. I have run many balljoint front ends, and had no problems. But if you want to stay away from a balljoing/swingaxle car, dont buy a 66, 67 or 68. Only the very late 68s had IRS.

well for one, they are "swingers".

they do not give as much travel, or independant suspension for going over rough terrain.

if one side of the swing is on a rock or hump, the other side is also up removing any drivability. irs allows the "non challenged (excludes me)" wheel to stay on the ground and still power you out of there.

IRS allows your wheel to stay flat on the ground giving you a full contact patch, a swing will hold it on the ground but not flat.

also in sand the swing arm acts like a poll vault around corners the sand buils up pullying the wheel under the car and the force and weight of the car pushed it over.....
