I am replacing my brakes.... What a head ache! okay. I took off my tire and the dust cap thing which was connected to this spring cable that ran up to my original spedometer. Which is wierd to me because i thought the spedo came from the tranny, But any ways once i got that all pryd off. I reallized that I had no brake pads what so ever. The deusch who sold me the car said he just replaced the brakes too. So yeah.... Not looking forward to taking off the other 3 wheels and using every last muscle i have.

So should I replace the whole drum and spindles... (I'm assuming there spindle? '70 Beetle) or should I just put brake pads on them?

i would say it all depends on the condition on the drums. if they have some pretty serious cuts and gouges in them, then i would replace them. if they still look pretty good, just slap some pads on and see how she drives.

From yor desperate writings I'd say buy bigger tools.

Spindles shouldn't need replacing. Just pads and if needed as shpuzz wrote the drums.
Perhaps the actuator is leeking as well, replace it also.
Doesn't cost that much.

Here is a good site about brakes in general: car bible - brakes

And about the guy you bought it from, he is an *ss, why lie about brakes, does he want to get you kiled? I had the same thing with my Van.
I mean if lying about anything, the brakes should be the last.
When bying a car I always look at the brakes first, then sparkplugs, sparkplugcables, etc. Most of the times these are bad. With a little money you can fix those minor probs.

Good luck!

Here is what you will need if there is NO brakes at all.

New brake shoes

New wheel cylinders

new brake hardware kit

Make sure the adjusters are still there, if not buy new ones

New rubber brake hoses

Repack & inspect the front wheel bearings

Take the drums to a local parts store or machine shop and have them turned, if they are out of spec then the person turning them will tell you, then buy new ones.

You might want to change the master cylinder too, remember the brakes are the most important part of the car, DONT BE CHEAP on the repairs.

you do have the idiot book, right? And it is always a good idea to leave one side assembled for reference...or maybe it's just me. And you do have really good jackstands, a solid surface, good lighting and patience...
Plus everything Bugzyla said and..buy a case of spray brake cleaner(the good stuff, not the environmentaly correct junk, you can tell the diff by the price, gooder is moorer!)clean, clean clean. Paint the backing plates, if nothing else you'll feel better with shiny stuff, we rednecks do! Paint at least the face(visible part)of the drums, maybe even a contrasting color to your wheels, and the lug nuts, so easy to do when you stick them thru a piece of cardboard first. Just nice stuff you know? Then go get your nails done, you deserve it. Not sexist, just a nice thing for ladies. We guys would go get a cold drink and fall asleep in the recliner.

They're right. The first thing I do to cars is put new brakes on them.

Looks like everything is there, just hasnt been repaced in at least a dozen years.

Just get the list of parts I posted earlier and start swapping them out.
