Hi
I am British living and working in Mexico. I own a '96 Beatle. I want to convert it to a baja, so any info, tips, etc will be great. The first thing I want to do is change the front brakes to disc's. If you have drove in Mexico; you know!
I want the same size tyres all round. Can I put, say a 185 with larger walls on the rims I have?
I am trying to keep the expence down so at the moment I have the 1600i but without the 'i' someone has taken the fuel injection off. So, I was thinking of putting a GM 1600 cavalier in? if poss, as I like this engine from cars I had in the UK.

Kevin - The old beetles were produced and sold in mexico until just a few years ago.

Ajedin, You can go as big as 7.00-15 tires on a stock beetle wheel. You will need to raise the car though. You can probably buy a disk brake kit from www.chirco.com if you want new.

Putting a V6 in the back will add a lot of weight. With a swingaxle car it will be extremely light on the front end. You should consider converting to IRS and getting some longer/wider rear arms. That will move your center of gravity forward to keep the front and down and give you a better ride with more travel.

Unfortunately for a baja you have the worst front and rear end. If you have the means you should also consider a kingpin front conversion. While the balljoint front end is plenty durable, you can't get much travel out of it. For desert running travel would be the most important thing.

For staying cheap, converting to a V6 is anything but. There is a lot of fabrication and extra cost involved with a water cooled conversion. If you have the skills, the 3.1 V6 is a great motor. If you want reliability in an inexpensive car you are better off getting your aircooled motor running.

Welcome ajeden, glad to have ya. Considering your means and expense. I'd personally stay with the air cooled 1600 due to reliability. Yes bajafun,,they made the old betles until 2004 I believe. My wife worked for a german company that supplied them with parts. As for travel. a few "modest" changes can be done to help. turning the ear torsions even a couple of degrees can help. As for the front, assuming you stil have a ball joint front suspension and not a strut type, You can cut and turn the front beam to gain clearance. I advise picking up the following publications for help....

Or an adjustable front beam. You can usually get one spindle to spindle for about $300-$400. check it out...Ball joint adjustable beam alright this one isnt spindle to spindle but im sure the rest of ypur parts are in decent shape.

They were like an underground bug,,nobody really knew about them. I hear they wouldn't pass U.S. safety standards. Thats why they had to stop importing them.

There were ways to import them, I don't know all of thge details. They cost about $13,000 (too rich for me). I saw an ad. at Perrie's German Auto about ten years ago.

the thing to do is get a newer old beetle from mexico and transfer all those components onto a u.s. pan. i considered this as an alternative to the baja that i bought, since i only live 20 minutes from mexico(yet i can't seem to find an engine?). i didn't look too much into it because itwould be too expensive.

Thanks again for all the info.
My '96 cost me, including some back tax; $18,000 pesos. That, I think is about $1,800 U.S.
If anyone is interested in looking in to importing to the U.S.A, lets see what we can do?
I do have another question for you guys. The fuel injection system incl fuel pump has been replaced by a carb and mech/fuel pump. Is this ok or do I need to put back the F.I?
