hey guys, i'm considering taking the body off to clean and do whatever other work that needs to be done. i'm about to start on the bolts now and was wondering what wires need to be removed and where to remove them from. also what should i look for while the body is off? i was thinking about painting the transaxel. would this be a bad idea, and if not what kind of paint can you guys recommend?

to be honest with you, and know how most VW's are the wireing is a rats nest. Wires cracking etc. etc. etc. It's not the hard to rewire a VW, I't just like wring a go Kart, just bigger.

I would yank that entire bunch of wires and start over. Use nice heavy wire 10 or 8 for the hot bus and 12 or 14 for every thing else. over build it and you will be real happy with it. If any thing electrical is the ghost in the machine for most people.

i'm not sure i'm gonna be able to get the body off, the first two bolts just broke right off. after that they would just spin but not loosen. i was hoping to start on a cage while i had the body off, but now i'm considering chopping the top off of my perfectly good body. cut out my old floorpans and weld in new sheetmetal instead of new floorpans and just turning her into a custom beater full with a custom spray paint job with SPEEDTRASH on the side in big bold letters( i can see it now!).

You can do one of three things here. you can slide a wedge between the body and pan to create space, then sawzall them off. Or, you can drive a wedge or prybar between the pan and body. put pressure on the bolts and then try to back them out. Or, chop it up and continue as you stated above....good luck to ya. Very Happy

I had to helicoil 10 or 11 body bolts on BugZyla. A suggestion, Soak them in penetrating oil for a day or so, then heat the bolt up with a torch and it should come out.

I highlyreccomend ZEPRESERVE NC penetrating oil. works better than WD-40. I use it all the time on Turbo and exhaust bolts.

The body bolts are threaded into the body itself. When I took them out a bunch broke off, even though I heated them and used penetrating oil on them. So after drilling out the broken bolts, I helicoiled them.

Do a web search for ZEP chemicals in texas. Or check your local yellow pages. ZEP is the manufacturing company.

one bolt broke and one came right out. but my problem now is that i never took out my steering wheel i jammed a screwdriver into the locking cylinder and couldn't get it to turn, so my column is locked up.

how do i get my column unhooked? i noticed that mesh part of the assembly is attatched at the top by just a simple clamp setup, should i bend the clamps out?

www.chirco.com is a favorite store amongst us..but do to what youre wanting and the size of it. I'd do a web search for a local(texas) off road baja shop as freight can be monsterous for big items. You might also try www.thesamba.com too. you can norrow down your area in the search button. check for new vendors and used too Good luck to ya....Get ya a dig. camera too. we need pics Very Happy
