it would be hard to get one into the USA because they would have to pass smog and saftey requirements of a modern car....

I have seen a few at shows around the Midwest. They are ball joint front, irs rear. Flat windshield, but super beetle type dash pads. They hydraulic lifters, fuel injection so they run smoother and quieter than a normal air cooled vw. They also have air conditioning.
Fundamentally though they are the same air cooled beetle that we all love to beat on.

Could they be brought in as wrecked/parts cars?

Pretty and pricey for something that you can't drive legally in the US. At least I think so.

But I wouldn't mind getting an engine or Disc Brakes from it. Smile

Somehow you can get them to be legal in the states. I have heard 3 different stories, and none make a lot of since to me. They tell me there are companies that can handle the logistics.
Still a bit pricey

Love you bug! is this the standard engine in a Mex. bug? What does one like yours cost in Mexico? Are the parts for turning it into a Baja the same as ours here in the states?

There's been a flawless 2002 for sale here in Utah for $1000 for a year. He can't sell it because no one's willing to take the chance on having a car they can't title. I'm willing to bet that's why he's selling in the first place. Ad says "he lost interest"....yeah, right.

I will add my two cents. 1983 applied to a company that federalized cars for a mechanics position. They would take overseas cars add door enforcements, change windshield, bumpers and add emissions equipment to make a car legal for sale in US. Late nineties company was buying old VWs taking to Mexico and swap all parts but pan, Titled as restored?
