Okay... So I got my 70 VDUB home and started cleaning it out, wet sanding, Dismantling and the whole shbang. I did this for 2 reason 1. to clean it up and start fresh. 2. So i can figure out what the hell to do first. So I sat there for a good hour and just looked at it. My dad came by my house and just laughed at me he thinks i got myself into something i cant handle.. lol But I was like Its okay dad I got a whole forum of big brothers on my laptop to help me. So here is where y'all come in.

I want to build a whole new front suspension since thats where it is going to need it the most I think. I went to the book store and bought Sand sports and Hot VWS and a few other v dub mags.

I def. want a 6 in wider. I'm debating on the towers though. I want to get some really nice shocks probly fox since there the best so ive heard. And all my buddies got them on there quads. I want something I can depend on and thrash around in the dunes. My buddy didn't build his baja very well and got his axel ripped out front underhim.. But hes a Dummy... and tried to build his in a week to get it to our trip to the dunes.

So any sugestions? Is my thinking in the right place? do I want to spend most of my budget on suspenion poeces that will last???

Read read read and read some more then listern listern listern and then LEARN . So get J Hibbards Baja and Buggies book and read it then speak to local ladds and others who go on the SAME terrain and see what experiances they have and learn from them. Then once you have done that then think about what you would like and plan it out. What suits one person wont suit everyone. I live in the Uk and plan to use mine mainly for forest and farm thus mud so my suspension set up will need to be different from say some one in cali or arizona who is jumping dunes constantly.

Well I dont really know anyone around my area to ask. Noo one is really into that kind of stuff. So I figure any where inbetween pismo Ca and Yuma AZ is going to be the same terrain. Its definately going to be a sand buggy! no doubt.

What's your budget going to be like? Tying the front beam into your cage is going to be an important aspect to consider. If you put all kinds of $$$ into travel and suspension, but only leave the beam attached via the frame head, you're gonna end up busting it up eventually.

I think you need to start with the cage and build from there, as a poorly-designed cage/frame can render the best shocks/etc. in the world basically useless. My car is a perfect example of that in the rear- I've got 930 CVs and 3x3 arms, and still only about 9" of travel due to a cage design that limits the length of shocks I can use. Some peeps get almost 14" out of that setup...

If you know someone with a welder you can start with a class 11 kit. That's what mine was.

I just didn't follow the directions... Wink

Chirco sells a nice 6-point cage that could be a good starting point, but you're gonna have to know someone who can do some tube bending/welding to tie in the front suspension and front/rear bumpers- possibly even add some reinforcing to the cage. For the money (they're only like $169 + shipping), it's hard to beat that 6-point to start with (IMO). That's a fairly big hurdle to get past though (cage).

For what it sounds like you hope to do with the car (dune somewhat aggressively), you're going to need travel. That usually means you're gonna need your upper shock mounts tied in to the cage (rear shocks- upper mounts INSIDE the car), and things like that.

It can be a long, expensive road you're headed down! Good luck!

Baja Chick, here is a good read and how to, building a nice basic baja. It is something to strive for as the budget comes up a little.

Is 1200 your overall budget or just the front suspension. If it is an overall budget, I would start by contacting Kcnaz or Bugzylla here about building you a custom ball joint beam, then replace your ball joints w/new German joints and get some decent shocks.

Here is a good shock for cars that run a cut and turned ball joint beam.
www.chircoestore.com/c...ts_id=4093

Doing this for the front will give you a good sand front end and be cost effective. If you convert the front to link pin like in the tech article I sent you, you can go taller, more travel, better shocks, but plan on added AT LEAST a thousand dollars if you go cheap. A front end like Hedrocks is probably a couple thousand in arms, spindles and shocks + the ton of time to build it.

I hope this all makes sense. If not ask for clarification.

You can certainly build a pretty decent baja on a budget. It's gonna be a bit of a challenge, but I've done it... In fact most of us here have. I was about your age when I got mine and started on it. I built it once and it was a pretty bad-ass machine and I used the HELL out of it. Here I am doing it all over again on the same car over 15 years later, and without the budget constraints I had when I was younger.

My advice:

1. Buy a welder (wire feed) and find somebody to teach you a thing or two about welding. There's plenty of guys out there that would be more than happy to help a BajaChick learn to weld.

2. Buy Hibbard's book and read it COVER TO COVER.

3. Ask lots of questions on this forum.

4. Repeat Step 2.

After you've done that about 50 times, you'll be ready to build a pretty mean machine.

I think you can do a lot to a stock front end to make it pretty strong. Heck, I put almost 100,000 miles on mine (some of them pretty damn hard) and only ever had one problem: I broke a ball joint once turning a corner on the street at about 1 mph.

Figure that.

Lots of travel is certainly nice, and makes for a smoother ride. Wider beams certainly make things a bit more stable. Disc brakes stop quicker, and big engines go quicker. Strength, however, is the key to the whole deal. If you ain't got strength, you'll be sitting in your driveway in you ass-kicking long travel, high HP hot rod, while all of your buddies are playing on the trails.

I would start with a cage, too, just like Hedrock was suggesting. I actually bought 3-1/2 of them to build mine.

Start with one. Buy your welder. Read Hibbard's book. Ask lots of Q's. Go to work.

Chow.
