So i've read that the 5 rib is the best. Why is that? What is the gearing on it? I have also heard of a 6 rib somewhere, once. Typo perhaps? Once the weather gets better I am going to swap my tranny to a bus one. I also want to know the best way of going about doing it. So far I am interested in what this article has to say:

There are 3 bus IRS transaxles that are desirable for off road use. The 3 rib 002 was the first one and production started in 1968 and went through 72?, then there was the 5 rib 002 in 73-74? and this was a stronger trans, the 3rd is the 6 rib 091 trans, the strongest and most desirable made from 75-77? The 78 & up 091s were side shift and cant be easily converted so stay away from them.

sounds like the kit to have to me,when i got my 3 rib i jerked out the old tranny, built me some solide mounts, and then used a bug axle that had been machined to fit bus cv's on the inside, bolted it in....at this point DO NOT DO WHAT I DID,IT WAS JUST TO GET ME A "FEW" DAYS.... then i cut a 5 inch long 2 inch wide hole in front of where the tranny linkedge meets the shift shaft, cut like 2 inches outa my shift shaft, then welded in a "custome" flex joint.......a 3/8 wobble joint from a stanley tool set....then made a support plate for this awful contrapshion i had concockted and then drove it........ beleave it or not it actually workd.but yea i'd say get that kit, then have a good time changin out trannyz....it realy isnt that hard tho.i could do it on my lunch break....dont ask how i no that....i just didn have time to work at home....and its true it wasnt guna hurt to miss a meal or 2

Which brings up a question:
I have a stock bug trans and since my baja is still in work in my garage I shouldn't be breaking it anytime soon. Rolling Eyes
But if I ran across a bus trans, what is an average good deal price that a person shouldn't pass up?

I am going to get a rebuilt one for whatever price I can get. The last thing I want to do is buy a lemon tranny and put it in and have to do everything over again.

If you buy a used one, I'd just put it in and try it out before rebuilding. They're real easy to remove and install. So's the engine. You might find out it works fine and save yourself the rebuild cost for a couple hours work.

You might find out it works fine and save yourself the rebuild cost for a couple hours work. I would first drain the oil out and replace with new while it's out. Easier that way.
