I had one that bolted around the bottom axle tube. I think it would be easy to make.

If you're thinking about a straight non-folding towbar, you'd be better off to just spent the 40 bucks and buy one, rather than fabbing one up. You'd spent that in materials alone. When towing, you might also consider the liability factor: If it breaks and you kill the guy behind you, you've got a much bigger problem if you made the bar than if a recognized company make it to fit your application.

Just a though from someone who's in the towing business and who has had a similar incident to the one mentioned above.

OK, now you will have to elaborate on that one. You can leave out the killed part though. Shocked

Positively make sure it is in neutral and unhook CV's if going for long distance.

I don't know about 57baja's experience but personally I can say it sucks looking out the side mirror on your UHAUL and seeing your towed (suppose to) vehicle trying to pass you.

thats the worst feeling, watching helpless as you trailer does it's own thing! Good thing no one was hurt! lucky lucky lucky!

And Jox, I agree with 57, just buy one and be done with it! 40 bucks is a SMALL price to pay to avoid any of the above scenarios happen to you.

We were towing a home-built trailer (in Arizona of all places) full of touring equipment with the band I was playing for, and heading to Texas to play some gigs. The wheel snapped off the axle and a guy hit it in the truck behind us. That caused him to go screeching out of control and his truck did 3-1/2 flips before it came to rest on a barbwire fence off of I-10 in the middle of nowhere. One guy was killed, and the other guy was paralyzed for life from the neck down.

You can't imagine the amount of guilt that one must work through when something like that happens. It's not a fun experience. I didn't personally build the trailer, but it was my van that was towing it. There was a huge legal fiasco, of course, and we obviously lost A LOT of money.

It was rather life-changing.

I had my tob bar fold up about to years ago on the way to Bug-tober-Fest. Did not have a cross brace in it. Bugzilla fixed my up. That thing will never fold up again.

The funny part is the baja was full of stuff as it was a trailer. so when it came loose I had to try and transfer all that stuff into the jeep so I could drive it. and this was in the intersection of Alam School and Baseline. at around 6pm. not a lot of happy people.
