when you weld you get hot and cold area's this become's "stress points"
when you re heat the area cherrie red and let it cool naturaly it looses the "stress points" and relaxes the metal.

When you weld chromoly tubing, your fastening it together, there by removing the ability to "relax". it needs to relax due to being hot then cold in such small areas as only a small part is being affected. Bending chromoly tubing also requires heat de-stressing cuz when you bend it, your streching half of the tube more than the other half. chromoly tubing has a spring steel quality about it which makes it stronger, but also trickier to fabricate with. Did I loose you yet? Hope not. And i want to add, this is based on my own experience of fabrication and not factual.

is chromoly considered a steel?when welding with metals other than chromoly, will they build these stress points?

when you weld steel together it shrinks. on small frame assemblies you may want to go back and "relax" a few areas as the guys suggested, but with te proper design and assembly the welds should not FAIL at any point. tubing has to be "spliced" together properly in straight areas. joints ahve to be cleaned and formed to match the aligning angles to prevent gaps. if your assembly is layed out for a "dry" run, you would be able to find any "loose" ends before final welding.

also use a 230vac welder. the 120vac units splatter more. use gas (requires welder that is set up for gas) with the proper core for cleaner and stronger joints.

still need more info? go to home depot and get the weling book in the tools area.

great sites (they'll soon come in handy), i have a lincoln-electric pro-mig 135. it has the gas outlet in back(all i need is a bottle to gas it) on most applications flux-cored does me well, but for a frame i'd drop the cash for a bottle. i've used shielding gas before, and damn i can make some pretty welds.

you know, writing this post reminds me how much i like to weld, and it sounds like we have some knowledgeable metal fabricators. we should have a custom project forum to discuss such things as fabricating parts, shortening/lengthening bajas, welding and similar. we could do this in the sandrail section but i think it'd be better to set-up another forum.

what do you guys think?

yeah, what i've used in the past is half argon/oxygen, as far as shielding gas goes there's different mixtures for different metals. and they all allow for really nice welds.

what you really want to use for all general steel is a 75/25 mix.
