Get your attention? I live in Flagstaff, it looks like I am moving to the valley in a couple weeks for a new job. I had a 72 beater bus a couple years ago that I did a poor man's baja job to. Fun little project. Problem was that at 7,000 feet, it had a hard time getting out of it's own way, let alone trying to climb anything. I had a 72 baja last year that I built from a standard beetle as well. Fun little buggy, but no room for the 5 of us, hence the baja bus idea again.

But, with the move to Phoenix, I thought I might give another bus a shot at being a baja bus again. Here are my thoughts. Feel free to chime in...

Pick up a bay window bus, preferably 68-71 due to the upright motor. I understand these engines better... Put 2.5" raised spindles in the front and re-index the rear torsion bars. Find some 27x8.5x14" tires for the rims, if it is a 71 or later, or 205/75/r15 tires if it has 15" rims.

The ground clearance won't be an issue, even at stock height. The weight is the problem. I think the lower elevation will help it run stronger though. No, it won't be jumped. But it would be cool to run around in the desert during the winter and spring/fall in it with the family. I also like the more agressive look.

Anyone know of a bus to be had?

It won't be jumped. My last one didn't roll over either. I'm not into extremes with the loaf. I just like the more agressive look, and thought that it would be fun to do it right this time with a bay window.

-Well, I picked up a 76 bus today. It has the 2000cc fuel injected engine. It is lowered with an adjustable front end and brackets for the rear end. Cool looking for now, but I want to put it to stock height, then raise it up a little.

Anyone want to assist in the lifting? Shoot, I'd pay someone to do it. Let me know. Thanks,

From what I read, the boomerang brackets on the rear of my bus that lowered it, can also be reversed to raise it above stock height. The front adjustable beam is an albatros. I think it can only go to stock height, but I don't know that for sure. Anyone know?

I'm torn between keeping it like it is, and fixing it up to sell, or reversing the lowered look and lifting it to make a baja bus. Sucks that my tires are shot, and I need to put some tires on it to get home to Flagstaff. I don't want to buy tires twice.

Turns out that the current bus will take too much to revert it back. So, I have a rat rod in the making. Someday, I'll get another bus and lift it.

Thanks.
