Has anyone seen a decent example?

I'm new to the whole VW thing, but the squareback seems like a decent offroad exploration type car - aircooled, good amount of area - and my personal favorite, cheap.

What are the pros/cons of the type III?

May be a little heavier and I think the front beam is different. Not sure about that though. I guess it could still be cut and turned... Question

I have seen pics of a couple and they look real nice Cool

I have seen a few fast backs, and a bunch of square backs off roaded. I was going to build a fast back baja but changed my mind cuz I got a thing instead.

The front beam IS different on a t-3, but the nice thing about them is they have a splined torsion bar much like the rear and you can re-index them for more lift without having to change any parts. Downside is they are ball joint beams but have disc brakes starting in 1966.

Sounds promising..someone's giving me a '72, which was previously used as an electric car - so no engine, but trans and everything else is there. Never been into the whole street car deal, so I was thinking about doing the offroad bit. .........

Anyone know of any sites or posts that detail a type III build?

And thanks for the responses too!

That's an interesting car, and pretty much what I had in mind. It looks like it's more sand oriented and I want to do a dirt oriented car, but yep, pretty much what I'm thinking of....thanks for posting that pic.

I had a 69 square when I was a kid, and it pisses me off that I sold it. I've thought about the whole off-road concept, too. One of the problems with the Squareback/Fastback is the engine configuration. You can't build them for too many horses because they'll overheat, although I've seen people put type 1 engines in them before. Another bummer about the Type III's is that you can't get an upswept exhaust system for them 'cause there's a door in the way.

They are cool, though.

Look at the approach angle of that front end. It has the potential for a decent rock crawler. LOL!

Used to be a body lift kit available for T3's. Using one makes it easier to install a upright T1 engine, less of a box to build in the back.

Shouldn't take too much to make a lift kit for it, should it? I'm planning on running a type 1 engine, just due to availability issues.

Like BugZyla was saying... lifting a III should be theoretically easier than lifting a bug. You shouldn't have to buy any parts (except longer shocks).
