I need to keep in mind this motor sat in the car unused for ten years.

I had a view rattles in my motor so I decided to adjust the valves. They were all super sloppy so I tightened them up to the loose side of .005. It ran a whole lot better. Then when I was driving around after an hour or so it got really sluggish and started chugging blue smoke, and lots of it. I limped it back to the truck and came home.

Now it has a definate miss somewhere but pulling the plug wires doesn't change anything. I'm hoping that one or two of the valves is too loose thus the miss but smoke is smoke.

Another thing, the throttle spring was getting hung up and one or two times when I'd shift the motor would just scream. I dunno if I did any damage to he motor but I'm certain I pissed it off pretty good.

So the question is, do I waste my time chasing gremlins on this motor? Or do I build a new motor? Or does anyone have a decent motor taking up space?

I've never built a bug motor and I'd like to give it a go, but I'm saving money to put another room on my house. What's it cost to build a decent motor? I don't want to go all out but I don't want stock either.

Is it making any funny metal to metal noises? What size is it?

If it's a 1600 you should be able to re-build it fairly cheap. If it's not knocking you could just put new P/C and heads. Should be good to go. 3-4 hundred dollars.

To add a cam you will have to split the cese. When you do that you might as well do bearings . this will add a coulpe hundred more

No, nothing like that. There is some tapping when it idles but when I rev it up it clatters really loudly. Another thing I forgot to mention is the oil pressure light has been bouncing on and off. It doesn't stay on, but it flickers alot. Oil looks good. So maybe it's a bad bad sending unit. I dunno. Probably burned a bearing.

I just came back in from outside. It starts right up, but it's sloppy sounding and it smokes like hell still. I must have broken a ring or gouged the cylinder wall pretty good. When I rebuilt the carb I got a huge amount of silty sand out of the carb so who knows how much got sucked into the cylinders.

If I rebuild I think I'd like to refinish the crank and cam, or would I just replace it? Redo the bearing and be new all the way around.

JimmyJack, if it was me I would tear it apart, replace the consumables figure out if that was enough power for me then build it stock or bigger. That way you know, clattering, fluctuating oil pressure, she needs some TLP

Yeh, I just need someone to tell me to go rip and tear. When I rebuild do I replace the jugs and pistons regardless? Can they be reconditioned if I do go back to stock? I think I'd to at least go 1641. But if it's only a difference of a few bucks I'll jump to 1776 or better.

Replace the pistons and jugs, replace bearings have the crank and case inspected at a VW engine shop,Check out the heads replace oil pump, clean EVERYTHING super good, there is more to it but this is a good start and get a rebuild book, but still ask alot of questions.

1641==no machining. 1776==machining and more dollars.

Here is a good how to on engine rebuilding. They built a 1915. 1776 to 1915 costs about the same. Check w/machine shop on enlarging the bores in heads (if still good) and case.

... and if you're going to build a 1915 and clearance the case, you might as well buy a stroked crank, too...

... and if you stoke the crank and add bigger jugs, you're going to need heads with bigger valves to breathe better...

... and if the heads breathe better, you might as well put some decent carbs on...

(This is how the illness begins)

I eventually stopped at a 2187, and it obviously ended up costing a bunch more than I was originally planning on spending.

Cool That's a scary thought 57. I think I'm just gonna build a 1641. The car itself isn't worth more than a couple hundred bucks. Maybe another day when I have something more tangible. I just wanna get this thing rolling again. Weather is too nice to be sitting at home on the weekends.

Jimmyjack, you got that right, get it running and have fun, 1600 is a good size, very dependable as far as VW's go.
