alright guys i about ready to build a race cage as soon as i get an engine, i know chromoly is the best but i hear it's much more expensive than steel, what kind of steel and specs( diameter, wall thickness, ect. should i use to design my own custom cage?

and does chromoly really cost that much more than steel?

I've been building my cage for the past 2 months.

If you don't know how to bend tubing it will take you a while...... But, I'm using 1 1/2 X .095 mild steel. I read a that if your car is over 2000lbs. to use .120 tubing. I don't know how much mine will weigh but all the tubing I have on it is sure making it heavy....

As for the chromoly I hear it is very $$$$$$$ and it is hard to work with.

Hope this helps, Rob

Chromoly will cost more upfront buying it raw, then afterward you'll need to stressrelieve every weld. But it is worth the work and money for the strength required for trophy trucks and such, a baja is light enough that I wouldn't even worry about a chromoly frame.

technically you are supposed to bake it in some gynormous oven, but you'll find if you ask around that most people take a torch and just heat each seam and joint up until its glowing cherry red.
