Anyone using GPS systems? If so, which one and why?

I thought this might be an interesting topic because I just bought one for my bug. The problem I found was there was no system available on the market that I could find that met all my needs. I settled for a compromise, and I thought maybe someone else might have been in the same boat.

I use my baja for around-town driving, as well as in the dirt. I've been on rock crawling trails with the 4x4's and have been in the air over a dirt road. I've been spinning tires in the sand, as well as spinning U-turns looking for a VW store I found on the internet. I've been lost and looking for my way back home, and also been looking for a gas station with my needle way past the "E".

Here's a list of things that I found that would be most important to me in looking for a GPS system. I chose a Lowrance XOG, but I found it to have a decent amount of the things I wanted, but it had it's shortcomings. Here's what it does and doesn't have...

- Turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance <yes>
- Decent size screen (4+" would have been best) <no>
- Audio output to interface with my dash radio cause my car's loud <yes>
- Onboard mapping/trail making capabilities, cause I love to explore and love to hunt and fish <yes>
- Flexible mounting capabilities <no> but with a dremel and a screw gun I managed to fix that.
- External antenna input <no>: I was originally going to mount it over the rollcage by my cceiling so it was out of sight of thieves.
- Compact and decent looking <yes>
- Removeable for fishing/hunting expeditions <yes>
- Downloadable maps and computer map making capabilities <yes and no> ...I have a Mac and the map making software is only PC compatible dammit.
- Adjustable screen illumination to see it during the day, as well as at night <yes>

Anyone else have any thoughts on GPS systems?

GPScity (website) has a lot of snap in cradles for all sorts of devices and RAM ball mounts. You can piece something together that will be functional and removable with parts there.

I have an older Lowrance iFinder which beyond the background maps, doesn't really have any means of providing turn by turn directions. Instead it gives more of a nautical interface with target bearing and distance (which I learned on). It works fine for me because it it lightweight and I often use it for kayaking and recording trip data.

I've got a Garmin Nuvi 660, and I love it, It doesn't allow you to mark trails, but it will allow you to bookmark a destination and it does have a decent database of nonpaved roads and trails built in.

In offroad racing, Lowrance is the most popular.

This is a very DEEP discussion among motorcyclists too.
I have a Garmin Zumo 550 and freakn' love it. Very Happy It is a bit pricey but you get a lot of goodies.

It has all the options you mentioned and a few more.

Turn by turn with TTS (Text To Speech)
Design your own routes via map software on PC or Mac as well as on the unit itself.
Audio output is via the typical mini jack or the onboard speaker (on auto mount only) plus the unit is Bluetooth capable.
Mounts as mentioned before can be found such as RAM Mounts. I use several of these for equipment on my motorcycle
You can get a few different types of maps for land or water
The screen brightness can be adjusted manually or I leave it set to auto. This lets it go darker when night falls, or back to bright during the day automatically.
It has an MP3 player and can use SD cards which I keep my tunes on.
Oh and it's water proof.

**EDIT**
I mispoke. The map software is NOT Mac compatible.
SORRY!

Tell ya what there joxracing, you and your co-driver follow me with your atv map and I will drop bread crumbs on the GPS to a area somewhere on your map, next morning I will follow you, you deviate off the route and it will cost you a six pack. And I would almost bet you have not taken a Land Nav course so this should be interesting.
