alright fella's, i almost have everything worked out. i really appreciate all the help and advice that you have given me.

i just need to know one last thing, hopefully.

so i got the heads and pistons and everything else hooked up and connected and tightened down, checked and double checked.

so then it turns on and runs, somewhat...
initially i couldn't get all the way off the clutch in first gear.
maybe compression, timing or carb adjustment.
bad gas?

got new gas.
got out of the driveway:)!!!!!

so now i'm finding out, as i let off the clutch i really have to rev it up and double clutch it a couple times till i get up to 2,000/2,500 rpm. then it goes like a bastard:)

i know i'm getting close to being able to show off my bug, it's just this one really small thing that's keeping me.

so what i need to know is what are the possibilities of it being carb, timing and compression.
and what are common symptoms of these things that aren't working right?

good times,
jeff

hopefully the first weekend in february i'll be able to go out to that meet in superstition mall.

Mine does the same thing. Really have to rev to keep it from stalling while letting out the clutch.

I have yet to put a timing light on it.

timing is supposed to be about 7.5 retarded as the crank with the marks on the timing wheel turns counter clock-wise correct?

i'm still confused on how to get this right...

No it's clockwise. 7.5 if the dist is stock. most of us are runnoing a 009 dist. You have to time them different. I think its 24 degrees BTDC @ 3000rpm put I need to doulble check.

Is your carb too big? Do you have a vacuum leak? your choke open or is it closed? Floats set to high etc.

Well just to clear it up it was the Bosch PLATINUMS that bajawarrior had in his motor. The Bosch Supers work fine as well as the autolites or NGKs. The Bosch Platinum plug is not a good one to run with a standard (points or HEI) ignition, they work best with a high output ignition such as a MSD or DIS ignition.

Yeah, it sounds to me like a timing problem to me, or a problem with the idle circuit in your carb. I see that you are running a Weber Progressive and not with a 009 distributor? You kow the vaccuum advance needs to be hooked up with a stock distributor. Otherwise, it will not advance properly to meet the engine's needs. One other thought: I would set TOTAL advance at 30 degrees BTC with a timing light (at 3000 to 3500 RPM's) once you verify that your vaccuum circuit is operating properly. VW's tend to run best right in that range.

As far as the idle circuit goes: All VW carbs that I'm familiar with have a mixture screw for the idle circuit. I've never played with a Progressive, but my 44's have 'em. The idle control circuit usually controls the fuel until about 2500 RPM's. If it's out of whack, you'll have those symptoms. The rule of thumb is back the screw out a bunch until it idles OK, then slowly turn it in until you first start to hear it misfire. You have to pay real close attention. When it first misfires, STOP, then backit out 1/4 to 1/2 a turn again. This will at least get you in the ballpark, even though I don't know the exact specs for your carb.

One other thing you might try: Sometimes crap gets stuck inside a carburetor fuel passage. Take the air cleaner off and run the engine at 3000 RPM's and cover the air intake tightly for a few seconds with your hand on top of the carb to force the engine vacuum to suck out whatever crap maybe in the fuel passsage or jet. Sometimes this will magically fix a problem that nobody else has ever seen. I know from experience that this works sometimes.

Try those things. If they don't work, there's other things that we'll get into.

the distributer isn't stock or a bosch 009. it does have centrifugal advance on it.

i'm thinking i'm going to have to start inviting ppl over to help me out with this.

anybody like beer?

maybe next sunday (27th) i could grab a couple cases and figure this out...
the car is out in Fountain Hills, so, let me know what you guys are thinking...

good times,
jeff
