There are so many factors that make that a hard question to answer. It realy depends on what type of Baja you are talking about, what you start with and how much you can do on your own.

Quick answer, for a normal mostly street drivin-mostly stock $2000-$3000. For a pretty good prerunner $5000-10,000. For a full blown race car $50,000-$70,000.

Buy the best one that you can afford, then upgrade as nessasary. It's always cheeper to finnish someone else's project then to start your own.

Any year will work, btu no super beetles. all bugs up to 65 had the link pin front end (most desirable front end) and 66 - 68 had ball joint front swing axle rear (least desireable suspension front and rear) 69 & up are IRS rear and balljoint front (IRS is the most desirable rear suspension). So you have a choice. Just buy whatever you find, or get a 65 and earlier and convert the rear to IRS, or get a 69 & up and convert the front to link pin.

thats the truth right there..and youll never get the money out of it that you put in it. although there is a certain enjoyment building the whole car..
