im trying to get my engine started and happened to brush up against the coil, and it was almost too hot to touch! is this normal? or should the coil not be that hot?

also does the distributor wire go on the positive or negative post on the coil?

now should he choke be getting hot to the touch?, there is something within the automatic choke, that is keeping the engine from idling, that is keeping the butterfly from closing enough

Where is the wire going to the choke coming from?

the wire goes from the coil, to the sylonoid on the carb, then splits to the choke

yes...think we found the problem, the guy that built our engine, put a 6volt choke on instead of 12volt, so that could be why its getting so hot, and not functioning properly? just wondering if the coil is a 6volt also!

make sure u have coil with a ballest resitor. a coil is just a coil of wire so when the point are closed you creat a short/ burned points etc. Coils come in 2 basic types ballest and non ballest if you have one with a bilt in ballest your good to go, if your coil does not have a built in ballest you need to get one or you will start to burn things up, Ballest is a white block.

Ballast pictures

with out it things will get real hot like your coil.
