Kind of long......

Okay.... I bought this buggy/rail a year ago and have been tweaking and swapping old parts getting ready to roll. It sat idle for 10 years. So basically for the last year I would replace a part and drive around the block. So far no issues.

Last week was the 1st time I had taken it out to the desert to really open it up. We got out there and started the motor and the green dash light was lit up like our Xmas tree. First time that has happened. I shrugged and drove it anyways. It ran like a top. Came home and forgot about the light. I ended up replacing a shock and two tie rod ends.

2 days later I went back out and it ran like a top again, but no green light. Came home, replaced another shock and built a tie rod for my new tie rod ends. I hooked a voltmeter to my generator and got nothing. I polarized the generatorand it spun, hooked the belt back up, grounded the DF to the case, checked the voltage between the D+ and the case and got no voltage at all.

So the million dollar question is? Do I replace my gen, regulator or what?

If you're checking for volatge at the gen and you get nothing, it should be the gen. But I run Alt. so I could be wrong. Rolling Eyes Bugzylla will be able to correct me.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of voltage I should be getting at the gen but according some lit. I got off line it can be as high as 35 volts. But I also understood that if the gen spins when polarizing it's "good". After the regulator on the DF side I'm getting 12 volts. The D+ side shows 1 volt. I dunno what it means but that's what the voltmeter reads. No voltage going into the regulator.

C'mon man....... Be nice to me, I'm new to this stuff. I read that a few different places so I kind of took it as gospel.

So no readable voltage out of the gen, on either DF or D+ post. But 12v on the DF after the regulator and 1 v on the D1 after the regulator and a green light on the dash......

I'm thinking "take a dive on an alternator and stop fretting".

Anyone have a spare alternator taking up space?

Oh I'm not being mean to you, I just kinda feel for ya. I've fallen for internet know it alls before. Personally I'd go with the Alt. In fact I did. Sorry I'm not any good with the gen. Ijust don't have any real experiance with 'em. What did the Hanes manual say about it?

OK, If you connect the battery like you are going to polarize the generator and it spins, then it should be good. Then just make sure the regulator is hooked up right. The DF teminal to DF termonal on the generator, the D+ to the D+ onthe generator, the B+ wire to the battery, and the 61 to the idiot light. Make SURE the bulb is good on the idiot light. The light should come on with the key on, if not verify the bulb and connections are good. If the bulb comes on and the generator spins on the test but still doesnt charge, then you have a bad regulator.

Mykul, I know you're not being mean. I can't think of the site I got that info off of but it was step by step instructions. I assumed it was right.

Bugzyla, yes the light is working. It's on pretty consistantly now. I'm gonna take the dash box apart and make sure the wire didn't off of the light. I've been romping this this thing thru the desert the last few days on the same battery and it's still running like a champ. It even starts with no hesitation.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll be on here more often now I'm up and running.......

Jim

If there was a wire off the light wouldnt come on at all. So go back to the regulator or generator.
