winter is here again, lets have a heater box discussion once more for old times sake! this topic comes up at the same time every year, and I know I can find it all on the samba but I figure some would like to see it here as well. our old threads dont come up with too much, so here it goes!

lets not talk about all the 12VDC auxilery heaters out there, most are crap in north AZ where one (me) usually finds themselves stuck in a storm for a night in the middle of bum fudge nowhere.

ive read all about heater boxes robbing the motors hp, but is this really something to worry about when its a stock 1600 pushing 30x9R15 tires?

also the idea of having no tin around the motor disrupts the flow of warm/cold air, so will heat boxes even have an affect on warmth without the tin?

++thought about puttin an oil cooler in an enclosed box inside with opening/closing vents to the outside and inside with a fan that can either pass air into the vehicle, or out of the vehicle....kind of like a water heat system...++

thanks folks, lets keep this one going so we can get some good ideas!

then again... when it is cold outside and we want to warm the inside of the car, we probably shouldnt rob the oil's heat because the motor is trying to warm up... at the same time, when its friggn blistering hot outside, we dont want the oil cooler inside because it would add heat.... kind of pointless? hrm...

mechotronix.com/air-co...wagens.htm

uses the stock heater boxes with supposedly better results... maybe need something likes this to even the field when theres no engine tin...

With a 1 1/2" thunderbird exhust on a '62 van and 1600 engine, first with j-tubes then with heatter boxes, i could tell a difference in mileage and performance.
Think about these

with the recirculation system you found.

the heated seats idea i think would be great, though costly and maybe a pain to find/install..? anyone have experience with these? the other idea of a blanket is good, but when the car is bouncing and flying down the trail at 70, trying to miss trees and elk, the blanket would probably get in the way... (slide down into pedals Smile that and a constant warm air setup would keep the realationship with the lady,.. she gets cold and likes to whine.

There are aftermarket seat heater kits out there for not a lot of cash. I think I've seen them advertised for like a buck and a half and up (?)

You can go try and find someting in a wrecking yard too. Get the heaters, swiches, thermostats, etc. New beetles, ford and GM's higher end vehicles, almost all luxury cars will have them, so there's quite a pool to search from.

eek... i dont know if i can trust heated seats, especially aftermarket. ive read all sorts of good reviews, but ive burnt my bum on a caddi's heated seats.. it was not cool. in fact really HOT. that and what if (worst case scenario) something lodges under the seat and lights up.. AHH! that would stink. i think im going to go out and get some heater boxes and door seals. too bad i got rid of the stock german boxes last year... i knew ide be biting my tongue...

I was talking to a guy in Montana. He put two oil coolers on his car with on and off valve between the two. He can use one in summer or one in the winter. The winter one he put inside the car with two small fans on it. he said it did two things motor ran a better temp. and the inside of the car temp was 60 to 70 it took 20 or 30 min to get warm. and no exhaust fumes.

How was the set up. ? was there a three way switch so that you could choose which cooler the oil went to and How much more oil did he use each time he did a oil change.? The next question is where did he mount the second oil cooler.?

i had aftermarket heaterboxes (From Cip1.com) on my super and durring the winter it worked awsom! it would burn my feet sometimes... and i never had an issue with exaust gasses inside or any power loss on the engine. I was thinking on the oil cooler mounted inside with the fan for the baja. i think it would work great just set it up with a thermostaticly controled bypass so when the engine is cold it keeps the hot oil.
