Post subject: Chirco roll cage for Super got a question....

OK, I have a 74 Super, yes I know it's a bear to Baja, but I am going to try anyway.
SO, can I use the 6 point roll cage advertised here from chirco to use as a base to build a tube front? Or do I need something heavier?
I've built stuff for Jeeps, so I can bend pipe and weld (grind too) and I am thinking of just copying a rail front end (sort of) to put an regular beetle front axle on.
So, any suggestions? (besides getting another year)

I think it would be a good base. If you do that then you could easily convert the front end.

You should be able to use the cage. The only problem that you might run into is the front hoop hitting the dash, but it may not. The rear will fit for sure.

Front hoop? Do you mean the dash bar? Hey, cut and bend, then weld again!!
I am going to take the body off the pan this weekend, so I will have a better idea about reinforcing the pan for attachment too.

Some where I read supers bodys differ from standard bug by 1" between front fender and door. From door back they should be the same. Chassis differ at frame head. Not sure how your curved window and padded dash measure up though.

71 & 72 supers are the same from the dash back. The 73 & up im not so sure on the cage clearing the dash, but they do take the same doors so it might just clear.

an easier way to fab the front end for the link pin is to cut the McPherson crap off then weld on a link pin frame horn. thats what i did and am planning to have Bugzyla and gang strengthen all that into the cage. just make sure its all square. you can even give yourself another six inches or so in length depending onh your preference. . let me know if you have any questions!

OK, first question...
I have seen where others online have done that, where can I find a link pin pan?

You can buy just the frame head from Chirco

this is a very simple and effective way of transforming your super into an IRS/link pin baja. just MAKE SURE ITS SQUARE! i cant stress that enough... also good welds are a plus. note in the pic that i drilled half inch holes in the frame head BEFORE i mounted it, then "spot welded" the holes to the pan. dont forget to grind and clean all contacting metal for good penetration. i also beefed up all contacting ends with a few thick welds for structure. also it is imperative that you strengthen the beam to the cage, not that this isint already very strong if you do it right, but you can never be too strong! good luck
