It really depends on how hard you run it, and on how well you build it. A baja that's actually taken off-road will need more upkeep than my street driven car, for example, but that's because you're driving the hell out of it and need to make sure nothing's falling off. Smile I'd think maybe a half hour extra a month on top of the routine maintenance all air cooled vw's need would be more than enough to spot any out of the ordinary "gotchas" that might crop up on a baja. Your mileage may vary until you get used to the car. There is the routine upkeep that's critical, but all in all, they're pretty easy to work on, even someone who's never turned a wrench in their life can maintain one in a couple hours a month.

If you buy a baja, you'll become handy pretty durn quick or you'll be stranded. Wink

Seriously though. I know TONS of people who had a vw as their first car because they're very easy to work on. Your pops may be playing devil's advocate to see how serious you are about it, but do a little research and show him you're willing to put in the time and he'll probably be ok. I'm actually going through that with my 14 year old. He wants a bug now and he says he's ready to get dirty learning how to fix and maintain it, so I'm going to see how serious he is. If he does the time I'll let him have my '66 when he turns 16, and if not I'll have 2 nice cars and a 16 year old who's walking Smile

That depends entirely on how pissy your neighbors are. Not as loud as a Harley with shotgun pipes, but as loud as 60% of the riced out Hondas out there (but a much better tone, doesn't sound like a coffee can on the exhaust). If you cruise just off idle in second and have your baffle in, you're not too loud. I wouldn't worry too much about it, the most they're gonna hear you is 30 seconds while you come in or leave.

I have a rail that I take out all the time and it rarely needs any work. In 2 years I have had a steering coupler break (because I hit a rock), a generator go bad, and a leaky master cylinder. Nothing major, and not alot of upkeep. Bajas are about the same depending on the abuse, but the main things you will need to know is how to adjust the valves, change the oil, and adjust the brakes.
