im kicking around the idea to buy a bus and use all the good parts on my dads 68 baja..
so what year would i need to buy..are the front suspensions interchangeable.i want the earlier suspension without the ball joints..a 1600 or better and i like those gear reduction boxes at the rear wheels.
and when did they go from that big 5 bolt patern to the dinky 4 bolt patern (beetles)...thanks

Busses are kingpin to ’67, ball joint ’68-. ’66-67 had unique reduction boxes with plug on backside. As far as I know they never had 4 lug unless converted to sedan parts, they went from 5x205 to 5x112 in ’70 same year they went to front disk brakes. I have a ’62 with ’68 front axle so they can interchange. One of my buddies told me he thought the best bus was ’78 with 2-liter engine, better able to stay with traffic.

if you got a 68 just look for a bus tranny. just the tranny upgrade will turn alot bigger tyres. then you get better ratios for offroading and hill climbing.
redux boxes will cost a bunch, plus you need a few other parts to complete the whole swap. if you can even find the bus they came outta. if you do find a real old bus it$ gonna co$t you a bunch of monie$. those busses are worth alot.

you can find bus trannies for as cheap as $100 around here. then you will need to either widen the rear or get stub setup. does your baja have IRS or swing axle? I think thats the only year swingaxle came with 4 lug, if its not IRS.

I haven't ever converted swing to IRS but is sounds like its not to hard. there are alot of writeups on the whole process. just replace the BUG irs with a BUS IRS tranny. they come in 3,5, and 6 rib versions. the later being the strongest.

I guess it all depends on what you have to spend on this. I made my own adapters on all my bus tranny swaps with no drilling the tranny either. Its a real simple design and has never had any issues. uses 1/4 plate steel and some welding and thats it. there are ones for sale also.

the ratios of a bus tranny are lower to help a 40 hp engine push a 3000lb bus full of hippies, beer, and enough munchies to last a year for the weekend. when you swap it out it makes so you can run bigger tyres with no tranny issues. hills that normally you would climb in 1st with the engine screaming at redline can be taken in second with less stress and rpms to the engine. I couldn't ever get to the top of this hill right down the road, and it sucked to back down it, bad. after the bus swap I launched off the top of it about 4 ft, scared the hell outta my friend and I the first time. second gear the whole way.

like I said it depends on the money you want to put at it and how hard you wanna off road it. also it depends on if this is your daily driver or you can drive another car while doing work on it. these are the #1 things to consider.

if it were me and swing axle I would start hording parts for a 3x3 or 2x3 trailing arm setup and do it all at once. 2x3 lets you run bus axles like I have and its cool cause if you blow a axle they are pretty easy to find and cheap, plus if your gonna street it, it keeps the tyres in a lil more.

thanks guys,
this baja is my dads and im really getting into it cause its a me and him project.hes 70 now and im really wanting to enjoy every part of this project with him..he dosent seem like what i would think 70 would be though...hes in great shape,,,either that or if had to many heiniken,or both,lol.
anyway, im a jeep guy,cherokee mostly...modified with lots of HOME BREW...
but my first love and vehicle was a 63 bug that i turned into a baja when i was 15 and went threw 2 other vwbs to keep er running..and i had a blast...sunk er in the cle elum river once and it took a quad and two three wheelers to pul me out...good times...
anyways i want to put a bus trans in this bug for my dad...ill pay for it if i have to...my dads kinda low budget.
so saltyslug can you tell me how to make whatever it will take to do the job ,or can i buy the info on that adapter...i like to cut and weld steel...thanks and ill be talking to ya...

My 68 Baja has a bus rear-end in it. I love it. It was my fathers baja and he tells me that it was in there when he got it. It has the large gear reduction boxes on it. I have no clearence issues and I'm running 31x 10.50's on the rear. It is just like everyone is saying the gear ratio is perfect for off roading. I use to go off raoding with my brother who had a baja with a big motor and a stock trans and he was worn out from shifting and clucthing by the end of the day. I would just put my bus trans in second and ride the clucth not much shifting.
Now the bad,, Mine is a swing axle jacked up the ride is horrible. I am planning on doing something about that. The other thing is the gear reduction boxes are VERY VERY expensive. The bearings in the boxes run about $40 each and there are 8 of them, also they are getting hard to find parts for. I had mine completly rebuilt and thought about changing it to IRS, but who ever put in the bus rear end acctually cut out the torson bar tube and used the one from the bus. When I had mine rebuilt I had taller gears put in 3 rd and 4 th so I could run on the freeway. Sort of defeats the purpose of the bus rear end. One reminder the bus trans runs in reverse when using the reduction boxes.

yeah gear reduction is the shizzle if you can find the pars and pieces. and if it were to be all out offroad. if your talking the bigger set, those are big nut and the others are small nut. I have a set of big nut reduction boxes but the axles were cut off right outside the tranny. I am keeping them around for something, just havent figured it out yet.

what about running stock Trailing arms and T1 axels with the bus trans? Could i just change the CV on the axel that attatches to the bus tranny? or would i need the stubs cv's and a custom length axel? Trying to do this on the cheap for now till i can afford 930's

The bus box is wider than the type 1 trans, so you will need shorter axles.
Call Chirco's for the conversion axles.

You don't need shorter axles but you would have to trim back the back stop on the axle. The bus CV's are wider than the bug. We ran many like that but they would break fairly easily at the cut-back part. Your best bet would be to get some 924 or Thing axles. Grab the stubs while you are at it and convert the whole thing to type 2 CV's.

This is all depending on doing the IRS conversion on your car.

So am i trimming the stubs where it cups the cv or the axel its self? or both? With stock length trailing arms wont the axels bottom out aginst the stubs and flanges on the type 2 gearbox. And one last question... Will the type 2 stubs fit in the stock T1 trailing arms? Thanks
